About the Role

As an Avionics Integration and Test Engineer on the Blue Origin Engines Avionics team, you will own the integration and verification of the avionics that control and monitor rocket engines. You will work at the boundaries between hardware, FPGA, embedded software, and control systems, taking units from first power-on through formal requirements verification and into engine-level test. You will set the verification strategy for the subsystems you own, author the requirements, interface control documents, and design documentation that the discipline teams build against, and represent integration and testability in the architecture decisions that shape the next generation of engine avionics.

Responsibilities

  • Bring up and functionally test engine avionics units: first power-on, functional checkout, and troubleshooting to root cause across the hardware, FPGA, embedded software, and controls boundaries.
  • Set the verification strategy for the avionics subsystems you own, and lead verification and integration campaigns from planning through closure.
  • Define verification methods and expectations against requirements, author and execute test procedures, produce test reports, and drive requirements to closure.
  • Author and maintain requirements, digital and electrical interface control documents, and design documentation that the hardware, FPGA, software, and controls teams build against.
  • Integrate avionics into the engine system and support stand and hot-fire test campaigns, including on-console test support, anomaly investigation, and corrective action.
  • Represent integration and testability in cross-discipline architecture and design decisions spanning FPGA, embedded software, control systems, and hardware.
  • Mentor engineers on verification practice, test execution, and troubleshooting technique.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical field, and 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with each of the avionics disciplines this role integrates across: digital and analog hardware, FPGA design, embedded software, and control systems. Working knowledge of at least one of those disciplines is required. Depth in more than one is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience bringing up and troubleshooting electronic hardware, including reading schematics and interface control documents, and isolating faults across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Experience with formalized verification activities (test cases, procedures, reports) and driving requirements to closure.
  • Experience authoring requirements, interface control documents, or design documentation.
  • Experience owning a technical scope end to end and leading the work of others, formally or informally.
  • Collaborative interactions with multidisciplinary engineering teams while maintaining objectivity and independence.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs.
  • Flexible and adaptable mindset.
  • Self-driven with the ability to seek out requirements with minimal direction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with engine, propulsion, or launch vehicle avionics.
  • Experience with safety-critical, human-rated, or real-time embedded systems development.
  • Experience with requirements management tooling such as Jama or DOORS.
  • Experience supporting hot-fire, test stand, or vehicle-level test campaigns, including on-console test support.
  • Python for test data capture, reduction, and analysis.
  • Simulink for motor control and HDL generation.
  • Problem solving and debugging skills in VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog.
  • Problem solving and debugging skills in C/C++.
  • Experience with computer networking systems and protocols, including serial and deterministic buses such as RS-422 and Ethernet.
  • Working knowledge of configuration management and source code management systems.
  • Experience with DevOps and Agile/Scrum.
