Blue Origin · Seattle, WA · Electronics · first seen 2026-09-03

About the role

As an Avionics Components Test Engineer on the Lunar Core Components team, you will serve as the test engineer for one or more Motor Control units reused across multiple vehicles and mechanisms supporting human lunar missions. You will partner directly with Responsible Engineers to define test strategies, develop test plans and procedures, and execute development, risk reduction, qualification, and acceptance test campaigns. You will work within a multi-disciplinary test team and interface with vehicle teams, NASA, and National Team Partners to ensure controllers meet performance, fault tolerance, and safety objectives.

Motor Control units you may support

  • Zero Boil Off Motor Controller (ZMC)
  • Zero Boil Off Motor Controller Turbo Alternator (ZMC-TA)
  • Dual Motor Unit (DMU)
  • High Voltage Motor Unit (HVMU)

Responsibilities

  • Own the test scope for one or more Motor Control units as the test engineer, partnering with the Responsible Engineer to understand requirements, design intent, interfaces, and fault-tolerant behavior
  • Plan, write, and execute test plans and procedures for development, risk reduction, qualification, and acceptance testing
  • Support bench bring-up and early hardware characterization alongside the design team
  • Define and execute Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test strategies where applicable
  • Support environmental test campaigns (thermal-vacuum, vibration, EMI/EMC) including test planning, procedure execution, and anomaly resolution
  • Drive verification closure: map test evidence to requirements, track open items, and ensure test reports meet qualification standards
  • Identify, document, and track test anomalies through to resolution in coordination with the Responsible Engineer and broader team
  • Contribute to test infrastructure development including test equipment selection, test bed design, and ground support equipment needs
  • Communicate test status, risks, and results clearly; support and lead technical reviews at appropriate milestones
  • Apply lessons learned and best practices across the controller family to improve test efficiency and reuse

Minimum qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field
  • 3 or more years of hands-on experience testing and/or integrating electronic systems or devices
  • Sound understanding of electronics and electrical circuit fundamentals
  • Experience developing and executing test plans and procedures in a structured engineering environment
  • Familiarity with motor controller behavior including fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR), safe states, and built-in test
  • Experience supporting or leading environmental qualification test campaigns (thermal, vibration, EMI/EMC, or equivalent)
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, ICDs, and requirements documents
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including documenting test results and supporting technical reviews

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience testing Batteries, voltage distribution systems, or Solar Arrays
  • Experience with spacecraft or aerospace mechanism controllers (e.g., gimbal drives, valve controllers, pump drives, deployment mechanisms)
  • Experience working within a safety-critical development environment (NASA, DO-178, IEC 61508, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with space radiation effects and their implications for electronics testing and verification
  • Basic project management skills: planning, milestone tracking, risk identification, and cross-team coordination
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC standards and test methods

Compensation

Base pay range for WA applicants: $107,136.00 - $149,990.40. Other site ranges may differ.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance
  • Paid parental leave, short and long-term disability
  • 401(k) with company match up to 5%
  • Education Support Program
  • Stock Options for all regular employees working at least 20 hours per week
  • Up to 4 weeks paid time off per year and up to 14 company-paid holidays
