About the Role

This Battery Cell Engineer position is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, supporting development of Blue Moon landers and Blue Origin's sustainable infrastructure for crew and cargo transport to the lunar surface. You will join a small team of experts responsible for a common battery used across multiple Blue Origin business units, including New Glenn and Lunar programs.

Your Responsibilities

  • Define cell-level requirements and decompose vehicle-level battery specifications to cell requirements
  • Collaborate with cell suppliers to identify and evaluate lithium-ion cell technologies meeting Blue Origin requirements
  • Design, develop, and execute test methods for candidate cells; coordinate internal and external testing resources
  • Drive cell selection decisions based on test results and performance data
  • Extract parameters from cell data to support battery management system model creation and validation
  • Apply electrochemical techniques (dQdV, dVdQ, EIS, GITT, CV, PITT) to identify degradation mechanisms and conduct failure analysis
  • Use cell testing data to support control and estimation algorithms in battery management systems
  • Work with battery pack design teams to improve cell and pack performance, including thermal runaway passive propagation resistance
  • Review academic and industry literature to advance battery technology
  • Collaborate with program and manufacturing teams through build, test, and delivery of flight hardware
  • Support development of Automated Test Equipment for acceptance and qualification testing

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Chemical, Material Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of direct experience testing lithium-ion batteries
  • Strong understanding of electrochemistry properties of lithium-ion batteries with demonstrated cell characterization experience
  • Familiarity with dQdV, dVdQ analytical techniques and electrochemical techniques such as EIS, GITT, CV, PITT
  • Strong understanding of cell design, including constituent components and their interactions
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery development trends
  • Ability to work hands-on, independently and as part of a team, throughout battery lifecycle development and production phases
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and inclusion
  • Highly organized with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel and work at remote sites supporting test integration, commissioning, and training
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. degree in Chemical, Material Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in space applications
  • Experience in development of launch vehicles and with human spaceflight or high-performance aircraft systems
  • Experience estimating life of lithium-ion batteries
  • Experience with data analysis tools such as Python
  • Experience with fault tree analysis and DFMEA/PFMEA of electrochemical systems for root cause identification and mitigation strategies

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay range for Washington applicants is $145,188.00 to $203,263.20. Other site ranges may differ.

Stock options available for all regular employees working at least 20 hours per week. Paid time off up to four weeks per year and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
