BE7 Valves - Propulsion Engineer II

Blue Origin Engines designs, develops, manufactures, and tests engines and propulsion systems powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

You will take ownership of a valve component on the BE-7 Engine Program, managing the full development lifecycle from early conceptual trades through detailed design, manufacturing, test, qualification, and production support.

Responsibilities

  • Design valve parts and assemblies, selecting materials and processes while managing manufacturability, mass, and recurring cost
  • Use CAD modeling to define part features and component assembly layouts; prepare drawing drafts for parts, subassemblies, and top-level assemblies
  • Deliver analysis work including performance predictions, tolerance stack-ups, and test data analysis; review structural, thermal, and fluids analyses from FEA/CFD specialists
  • Peer review manufacturing plans, build procedures, and tool designs with manufacturing engineers to define the full production process
  • Plan, setup, and execute component-level testing including data analysis and results reporting to mitigate technical risk and verify requirements
  • Coordinate with supply chain and suppliers to ensure on-time delivery; define requirements for development of complex parts and assemblies
  • Support production by troubleshooting quality issues and dispositioning non-conformities
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Avionics, Integration, Engine Test, and Operations teams on cross-program decisions
  • Conduct impact assessments and tactical planning to meet team and program-level objectives, trading scope, schedule, cost, and risk
  • Manage development activity scope using schedules to forecast and track progress towards key milestones

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in engineering discipline (aerospace, mechanical, or physics desired)
  • 2+ years of professional engineering experience with valves, pumps, mechanisms, electromechanical actuation, or fluid control systems
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate across large programs
  • Ability to own and execute development activities with autonomy in problem-solving and low-impact decision-making
  • Say-Do mentality to work planning and tracking
  • Strong technical fundamentals in mechanical design, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, and thermodynamics
  • Direct experience with design, manufacturing, and test of valves operating with incompressible or compressible flow
  • Knowledge of fluid control components and system-level operation
  • Familiarity with common valve architectures and their performance trade-offs
  • Knowledge of valve design processes, methodologies, and techniques to predict performance and verify compliance
  • Knowledge of seal designs, polymers, and their application based on leak performance and operating conditions
  • Knowledge and selection of part materials and processes considering load paths, joint design, tribological wear, structural limits, thermal conditions, material fluid compatibility, corrosion, and electrical bonding
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical requirements into product design using margin and factors of safety
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling
  • Proficiency in part and assembly drawing drafting
  • Experience with data processing and analysis
  • Experience evaluating non-conforming hardware and preparing disposition rationale
  • Knowledge of subtractive cutting or forming manufacturing processes (turning, milling, grinding, honing, bending, tapping, etc.)
  • Knowledge of quality processes at part-level and assembly-level after manufacturing
  • Experience with test planning, execution, data analysis, and results reporting
  • Experience with component-level testing for verification of valve requirements including flow rate, leakage, dynamic environments, thermal environments, and operational life
  • Experience designing test setups for pressurized fluid flow testing including control valve, duct, fitting, and instrumentation selection
  • Exposure with fluid flow and leak testing using cryogenic fluids and high-pressure gases

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in engineering discipline
  • Experience with rocket engines or jet engines
  • Experience designing products with exposure to cryogenic fluids and high-pressure gases
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Assembly (DFA)
  • Knowledge of FEA analysis tools (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with Creo 10 or greater and Windchill 12 or greater
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.100 Standard for Engineering Drawing Practices
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 Standard for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience in supplier management
  • Experience with project management principles for managing scope, schedule, cost
  • Experience creating and managing schedules for moderate complexity projects
  • Experience working within a scrum-based agile project management framework

Location and Travel

Greater Seattle Area. Travel expected up to 10% of the time.

Compensation

Base Pay Range for WA applicants: $99,201.00 - $138,880.35. Other site ranges may differ.
