About TeraWave

TeraWave is Blue Origin's revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO).

The satellite product includes digital and analog avionics, EPS, propulsion and GNC electronics, thermal-control hardware, RF electronics, photonics, sensors, connectors, relays, magnetics, batteries, mechanisms, and other electromechanical devices.

Your Role

As the TeraWave EEE Parts Engineer for Satellite and Payloads, you will be the program technical authority for EEE part selection and application across the spacecraft bus and RF and optical payloads. You will establish a risk-based parts-management system, qualify new technologies and suppliers, control BOM risk, and partner with design teams to prevent part-related failures and supply disruptions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and execute the TeraWave EEE Parts Management Plan and approved-parts strategy, tailored to mission criticality, application, environment, production rate, and acceptable program risk.
  • Review and approve EEE parts for all TeraWave satellite and payload applications, including avionics, EPS, RF, optical, propulsion, GNC, thermal control, mechanisms, sensors, and harness assemblies across development, qualification, and flight configurations.
  • Establish selection, qualification, screening, derating, upscreening, traceability, storage, handling, date-code, lot-control, and change-notification requirements.
  • Evaluate commercial, industrial, automotive, military, and space-grade parts using manufacturer data, process maturity, qualification pedigree, construction analysis, failure history, radiation evidence, and application conditions.
  • Maintain a configuration-controlled approved-parts list and part-approval workflow linked to product BOMs, drawing releases, deviations/waivers, risk records, and supplier changes.
  • Lead part-application reviews covering voltage/current/power/temperature derating, transient stress, surge/inrush, switching frequency, thermal margins, mechanical stress, solderability, packaging, mounting, and life limitations.
  • Coordinate with Radiation Engineering on TID, DDD, SEE, lot-specific evidence, and radiation testing; ensure radiation dispositions are inseparable from the part approval.
  • Coordinate with Reliability Engineering on failure rates, failure mechanisms, FMEA criticality, life models, and part-level inputs to reliability predictions.
  • Coordinate with M&P, PCB/CCA, harness, and manufacturing teams on prohibited/restricted materials, tin whisker risk, red plague, lead-free controls, counterfeit avoidance, moisture sensitivity, cleanliness, and workmanship.
  • Define and oversee destructive physical analysis, construction analysis, qualification, screening, lot acceptance, burn-in, life, and failure-analysis activities as required.
  • Assess obsolescence, allocation, sole-source, counterfeit, end-of-life, and product-change-notification risk; develop second-source, lifetime-buy, redesign, and surveillance strategies with Supply Chain.
  • Drive part standardization and reuse across LRUs and payloads to reduce unique part count, qualification burden, procurement complexity, and recurring cost.
  • Support supplier audits, source selection, technical interchange meetings, failure investigations, MRB, nonconformance dispositions, and corrective actions.
  • Create dashboards and metrics for BOM approval status, radiation evidence, lifecycle health, exceptions, screening/test status, and supply risk using PLM and enterprise data sources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in electrical engineering, materials engineering, physics, chemistry, reliability engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in EEE parts engineering, component engineering, avionics hardware, product assurance, semiconductor reliability, or electronics manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of semiconductor, passive, connector, relay, magnetics, optoelectronic, and/or electromechanical part technologies and common failure mechanisms.
  • Experience reviewing BOMs, manufacturer data, qualification reports, part changes, derating, screening, traceability, or part approval documentation.
  • Ability to evaluate risk-based use of commercial components in a high-reliability application and document an auditable technical rationale.
  • Ability to collaborate with design, radiation, reliability, M&P, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and suppliers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in electrical engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, reliability, or a related field.
  • Experience with spacecraft or high-altitude radiation environments and EEE radiation data.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-883, MIL-PRF-38535/38534, MIL-PRF-19500, NASA EEE-INST-002, ECSS-Q-ST-60, JEDEC, AEC-Q, and relevant IPC standards.
  • Experience with high-voltage/high-power semiconductors, wide-bandgap devices, batteries, RF/mmWave parts, photonics, FPGAs/processors, memories, or high-speed digital interfaces.
  • Experience using Windchill or another PLM system, enterprise BOM/part-master data, and SQL/Databricks or equivalent analytics tools.
  • Experience creating a parts program that balances mission assurance with cost, schedule, and constellation-scale producibility.
