About this role
You will perform as an AC power systems engineer for ground systems within Blue Origin Operations. You will design, develop, and test AC power systems for ground-based infrastructure including launch ranges, substations, and test facilities. You will apply multi-disciplinary engineering knowledge and methods to design, implement, integrate, and support overall systems infrastructure. You will monitor performance to identify and resolve potential issues, perform root cause analysis on failed components, and work with others to establish and improve processes.
Responsibilities
- Perform system analysis and specify components
- Create electrical schematics
- Oversee installation and commissioning, with focus on compliance with standards and reliability in harsh environments
- Perform risk assessments, hazard analyses, and failure mode and effects analyses (FMEA)
- Create detailed electrical designs for power distribution, control systems, and lightning protection
- Investigate and resolve power-related issues, support ongoing maintenance, and provide real-time support during critical operations
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including schematics, control diagrams, and operational manuals
- Ensure designs and installations comply with industry standards, codes (IEEE, NESC), and project-specific requirements
- Conduct load flow analysis, short-circuit studies, and grounding studies
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering with a power systems focus
- 5 or more years of relevant experience in power systems design, analysis, and project execution
- Experience with power system simulation software such as ETAP, PSS/E, or PSCAD
- Ability to specify, size, and select electrical components such as transformers, switchgear, and circuit breakers
- Experience overseeing installation of electrical equipment and participating in testing and commissioning phases
- Experience with electrical distribution design, hazardous area classification, load balancing, single-line diagrams, design documentation, construction drawings, construction bid solicitation, contractor selection, construction management, field superintendence, permitting, and QA/QC
- Experience with commissioning, operating, and maintenance of power systems
- Ability to design and understand precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and modeling applications
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, physically climb multiple flights of stairs, withstand prolonged standing, and work in adverse weather conditions
- Ability to successfully apply for badging at a government installation
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license
- Experience in the aerospace (orbital launch vehicle) sector
- Experience with AFSPCMAN 91-710
- Experience working with DOD, US Air Force, US Space Force, or NASA
- Experience with NFPA 55, NFPA 70, NFPA 59A, or NFPA 780
- PMP or project management experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
