Embedded Software Engineer II - Lunar Permanence Verified today
Role Overview
Blue Origin's Lunar RF Systems group is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer II to join the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products. You will design, implement, and verify embedded software for mission-critical spaceflight systems, working directly with RF hardware, antenna, DSP, and FPGA engineers.
This is a hardware-heavy software role. You must be comfortable reading hardware datasheets, understanding register maps, making performance trade-offs, and debugging in the lab with real avionics hardware.
Responsibilities
- Develop Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including driver development
- Bare-metal or OS-level programming for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking/communication
- Hands-on debugging of avionics spaceflight hardware using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers
- Participate in design reviews, focusing on hardware and software partitioning
- Perform benchmark analysis and deploy benchmarking code to characterize hardware performance
- Bring up and utilize hardware accelerators in modern SoC devices (encoders, decoders, encryption engines, image signal processing cores, etc.)
- Scripting, Linux development, and hands-on work with development kits and sensor modules
- Define and implement embedded software for interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, and AMBA
- Develop boot and software-based fault-tolerance strategies
- Create comprehensive test plans covering functional and non-functional requirements
- Execute test procedures in the lab, verify board compliance, and perform root-cause analysis
- Publish internal documents, participate in design reviews, and review/generate requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related technical field
- 3+ years of experience in embedded systems or related fields
- Experience developing Board Support Packages and applications for embedded Linux targets
- Strong embedded software design and development skills in C/C++ with Linux (or similar) scripting experience
- Strong debugging skills using cross hardware/software techniques and tools: GDB, XSDB, GRMON, Logic Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, Wireshark, etc.
- Experience single-stepping through code, reading assembly, probing memory, and driving I/O
- Strong background in computer architecture: memory buses, cache, DMA, CPU execution pipelines
- Experience with version control systems (Git)
- Ability to work well in teams and independently with minimal direction
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field
- Extensive experience in prototype development, debug, and test in lab environments; RF hardware testing experience is a plus
- Previous experience building space software systems
- Experience with DO-178C, NASA NPR 7150.2D, and related certification guidelines
- FPGA development experience (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog)
- Software for hardware-accelerated functions (encryption/decryption blocks, encoder/decoder blocks, GPU, etc.)
- Tools and software for data analysis and post-processing (Matlab, Python, open-source Linux tools)
- Agile development methods
- Kernel and driver development
