The Role
As a Fluid Systems Design Engineer II, you will work on the Aft and Distributed Systems design team supporting the 4-Engine second stage (GS2-4E) of the 9x4 New Glenn vehicle. You will lead the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of fluid systems for rockets, engaging in all levels of the design cycle: conceptual design, requirements definition, thermo-fluid modeling, structural layout and analysis, integration, test, and mission support.
You will design ground support equipment, define test requirements, troubleshoot hardware failures, identify and mitigate risks, coordinate test readiness, execute tests, and review and analyze data. This role requires hands-on work and serves as a critical interface on system testing and initial build and upgrades to test stands.
Key Responsibilities
- Design fluid component hardware to meet cost, performance, and schedule constraints
- Design and route complex fluid subsystems including pressurization, pneumatics, and propellant utilization
- Create and own development, acceptance, and qualification test activities for your hardware
- Work with fluid components: solenoid valves, pneumatic valves, regulators, pressure vessels, and instrumentation
- Ensure systems integration by working closely with other groups to resolve issues at accelerated pace while managing risk
- Manage suppliers, schedules, and production interfaces
- Use 3D CAD (Creo preferred) and Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS preferred) tools
- Deliver completed designs using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards with clear, well-documented analysis reports
- Coordinate test readiness and execution, including fixturing design, work order management, materials procurement, setup, instrumentation, and manufacturing coordination
- Develop approaches to solutions independently
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
- 3 or more years of professional engineering experience with complex fluid systems
- Demonstrated experience with spacecraft or launch vehicle fluid system component design
- Experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles in detail design of aerospace or equivalent fluid systems and components
- Solid understanding of fluid components: valves, tubing, pressurized hardware, flex elements, seals, and fittings
- Proficiency in crafting engineering drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- Knowledge of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control for tubes, piping, machined components, and welded hardware
- Working knowledge of material properties and treatments
- Experience diagnosing and fixing fluid hardware
- Ability to utilize test instrumentation and control components: pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays, solenoid valves
- Direct experience executing production or qualification tests with emphasis on mechanical, structural, or fluid systems
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in 3D CAD programs (Creo Pro/E and Pro/E Piping)
- Familiarity with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Winplot, or other control, data acquisition, and reduction software
- Experience in rapid and scrappy hardware development environment
- Component testing and qualification experience
- Experience with design for reliability, low-cost manufacturability, assemble-ability, and operability
- Experience with thruster systems
- Experience with cryogenic systems (LOX and LH2)
- Experience performing stress analysis
Work Location and Travel
This position requires on-site work in Van Horne, TX. Travel up to 30% of the time or full-time relocation expected. Relocation provided.
Compensation
Base pay range for CO applicants: $90,934.00 to $127,307.25. Base pay range for WA applicants: $99,201.00 to $138,880.35. Other site ranges may differ.
