Role

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. The vehicle features a fully reusable first stage and seven-meter payload fairing.

We are seeking a design engineer with experience in flight vehicle fluid systems to serve as Cognizant Engineer (CogE) for the New Glenn upper stage. You will own the complete definition, design, development, cost, manufacturability, and delivery of flight hardware. A key challenge is delivering simple, low-cost designs that fully meet functional requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure complete definition and requirements of components and systems
  • Guide or complete design and analysis of your components and systems
  • Own design and development for in-house components
  • Work with suppliers and other Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components
  • Lead testing and verification including development, qualification, and acceptance testing
  • Manage project plans including cost, schedule, and risk management
  • Lead the team delivering your components, including cross-functional contributors
  • May mentor other designers, perform technical peer reviews, and check drawings

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field
  • 5 years of experience in aerospace propulsion or fluid subject area
  • Experience with 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with analysis of flow through components or systems
  • Proven understanding of aerospace materials and treatments
  • Experience in design, fabrication and testing of components for launch vehicle or ground support systems
  • Experience generating and interpreting Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Knowledge of propulsion and fluid system components (valves, regulators, pressure vessels)
  • Experience with design and development of seals
  • Experience designing and analyzing bolted joints
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of teamwork and inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience
  • Experience with launch vehicles, launch vehicle upper stages, spacecraft, or satellites
  • Experience in all phases of product development cycle from definition through operation
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids including liquid oxygen and hydrogen
  • Hardware procurement and prototyping experience
  • Advanced engineering degree

Compensation

Compensation range varies by location:

  • Washington applicants: $121,023.00 to $169,432.20
  • Colorado applicants: $110,938.00 to $155,312.85
