About the role
Join the Lunar Permanence business unit to develop fluid systems for Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers. You will design the gas systems for the Lunar Transfer Stage spacecraft, working through the complete lifecycle: definition, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, and operations.
You will work under a lead engineer accountable for gas and thruster systems, focusing on gas distribution, gas storage, and RCS thruster assemblies. Your responsibilities include sizing, selecting materials, and analyzing valves, pumps, heat exchangers, sensors, piping, and other fluid equipment for structural integrity under pressure, vibration, fracture, and fatigue.
Responsibilities
- Design fluid sub-assemblies including CAD modeling in Creo, trade studies, component procurement, and test data analysis
- Interpret and generate Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using AutoCAD
- Develop and maintain acceptance and qualification test plans for subsystems and components
- Develop and maintain interface definitions between fluid systems and other vehicle subsystems
- Design and analyze custom components for fluid, thermal, and structural applications
- Perform component verification of internally and externally sourced components to company standards
- Manage project plans including cost and schedule for your sub-assembly
- Work with suppliers and internal groups to identify components and support fabrication and installation
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
- 3-5 years of proven experience in design of aerospace fluid or mechanical systems, including test execution and verification
- Hands-on experience building and testing mechanical assemblies or pressurized components and systems
- Experience with 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
- Proficiency in crafting engineering drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- Experience performing flow and pressure calculations as well as structural and thermal analysis of fluid systems
- Proven understanding of fluid components such as valves, pumps, heat exchangers, tubing, and pressurized hardware
- Knowledge of standard installation and fabrication methods of fluid systems including tube stock, fittings, connections, fasteners, and welding
- Experience using engineering tools such as Simulink, Matlab, Thermal Desktop, Engineering Equation Solver (EES), or Aft Arrow
- Experience with requirement management tools (JAMA preferred)
- Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communications skills
- Ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships
Desired qualifications
- Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field
- Experience with hydrogen and oxygen systems and/or hypergol systems
Compensation and benefits
Base pay range for Washington applicants: $121,023.00 - $169,432.20. Other site ranges may differ.
