Lunar Operations - Industrial Engineer Verified today
About the Role
As an Industrial Engineer III in Lunar Manufacturing Operations, you will own production-system problems from start to finish with little direction from management. You will work with design, manufacturing, quality and supply chain as a trusted IE consultant. You will turn production data into decisions that keep lunar hardware safe, on schedule and on cost. Expect to work in production areas that are still being stood up, where the tools, data and standard work don't exist yet and you will help build them.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and design production workflows and processes to improve safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Own your assigned areas with little tasking from management.
- Lead complex cross-functional improvement projects with major business impact, from scoping through delivery.
- Apply lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methods (8D, DMAIC, PDCA) to plan, facilitate and track workshops, kaizens and problem-solving events.
- Partner with design and manufacturing engineering as an IE consultant to validate manufacturability and drive product and process improvements.
- Conduct time studies and work sampling, and keep build durations and labor requirements in the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) up to date.
- Perform capacity analysis for labor, equipment and facilities. Translate production plans into resource needs and identify constraints that limit output.
- Check source data before relying on it: trace it to its system of record, test it against actuals, and flag gaps.
- Develop and refine standard operating procedures and IE tools and templates for your area.
- Monitor and report build-health metrics (producibility, schedule adherence, labor performance, quality). Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Support risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety regulations, industry standards and company policy.
- Capture and share lessons learned and best practices across teams and sites.
Focus Areas
Based on skills and business need, you may be placed in one of several focus areas:
- Manufacturing Process Optimization: Own process mapping, time studies, MES data accuracy and cycle-time reduction for assigned assembly lines (Lunar Lander, Propulsion, Structures). Drive lean implementation on the shop floor.
- Capacity Planning and Resource Management: Build and maintain labor, equipment and space capacity models for assigned product lines. Support production ramps and vertical-integration decisions with data-backed resource plans.
- Production Quality and Risk Management: Coordinate process audits, corrective action plans and preventive risk assessments. Monitor build health and protect schedule and cost.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of industrial engineering experience in a manufacturing environment (aerospace or high-tech preferred)
- Advanced proficiency in at least 3 IE focus areas: time study, capacity analysis, process modeling, cost/benefit analysis, facilities layout, root cause analysis or labor budgeting, shown through delivered projects
- Experience leading cross-functional improvement projects from scoping through measured results
- Hands-on experience with ERP/MRP/MES/PLM systems and enterprise-level production tracking
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including judgment to question data quality
- Clear written and verbal communication for cross-functional collaboration and technical documentation
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher) or equivalent continuous improvement experience
- Advanced Excel modeling; experience with SQL, Python or Databricks for production data analysis
- Experience with BI and visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau or similar)
- Experience with simulation tools (AnyLogic or similar) and/or 3D modeling (CATIA or similar)
- Experience with PLM software (Windchill or similar) and document management (SharePoint or similar)
- Experience with capacity models, labor utilization planning or facility/asset sizing for a production ramp
- Demonstrated process improvements in an aerospace or other regulated manufacturing environment
