About the Role

As an Avionics Manufacturing Engineer, you will serve as the technical authority for subassembly and integration of spacecraft avionics panels on the Blue Ring spacecraft. Blue Ring is a spacecraft capable of supporting missions from medium Earth orbit to the cislunar region, with the ability to maneuver payloads exceeding 3,000 kg.

You will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into precise, repeatable manufacturing processes. This is a hands-on role requiring direct engagement on the manufacturing floor with technicians, quality engineers, and design teams at the intersection of electrical and mechanical disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate engineering intent, drawings, schematics, and configurations into manufacturing work instructions for avionics panel hardware
  • Lead avionics panel subassembly and integration, including PCBA installation, connector installation, cable and harness routing and termination, panel closeout, and bonding/grounding
  • Enforce workmanship standards per J-STD-001 (soldering), IPC-6012 (rigid printed boards), and IPC/WHMA-A-620 (cable and wire harness assemblies)
  • Serve as technical liaison between avionics design engineering, electrical systems, test operations, and manufacturing
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing work instructions for receiving inspection, fabrication, PCBA installation, wire harness integration, panel integration, functional testing, and refurbishment
  • Disposition and investigate root causes of Non-Conformances (NCs) and Discrepancy Reports (DRs); implement corrective actions
  • Author in-build redlines and recommend engineering changes to improve design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA)
  • Perform engineering drawing and schematic reviews, including IPC-2581/Gerber data review, and provide manufacturing approval
  • Conduct FMEA studies focused on avionics panel assembly processes, solder joint integrity, connector torque compliance, and harness routing
  • Drive DFMA principles across avionics panel design reviews
  • Identify and qualify tooling needs for avionics panel production
  • Ensure all work aligns with AS9100, ISO 9001, and applicable quality and safety standards
  • Support component acceptance testing and panel-level functional verification

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing, Electrical, Aerospace, or related engineering field from an accredited university
  • 1 or more years experience creating English-language work instructions
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or process engineering (0-3 years minimum)
  • Available to work A-Shift (Monday-Thursday, 5:00AM-3:30PM) with flexibility to adjust shift as needed and willingness to work extended hours

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance or ability to obtain
  • Certification in J-STD-001 (Certified IPC Specialist or Certified IPC Trainer)
  • Certification in IPC-6012 or IPC/WHMA-A-620
  • Prior manufacturing engineering experience in aerospace, defense, or space systems focused on avionics or electronics
  • Hands-on experience with avionics panel build activities including PCBA installation, RF and data connector termination, wire harness routing, chassis bonding, and functional testing
  • Experience with ESD-sensitive hardware handling and contamination control in controlled manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with conformal coating processes, potting, and avionics protection methods per IPC-CC-830
  • Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) applied to avionics chassis and hardware
  • Experience developing spacecraft or ADHP avionics hardware
  • Experience with Bill of Materials management and BOM reconciliation in PLM environments
  • Proficiency with Windchill or equivalent PDM/PLM tools
  • Strong skills in JIRA, Confluence, MS Project, or Gantt charting
  • Material Review Board (MRB) experience including Non-Conformance Report authoring
  • Experience with AS9100 Quality Management System and related quality processes
  • Proficient in high-quality work instruction writing in fast-paced production environments
  • Strong computer skills and ability to quickly learn new software tools

Work Schedule and Location

  • A-Shift: Monday-Thursday, 5:00AM-3:30PM
  • Location: Huntsville, AL
