The Role
You will be responsible for developing new rocket engine turbomachinery component manufacturing and assembly processes. You will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into fully functional turbomachinery hardware ready for test, qualification, and flight. You will identify, develop, and deploy methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize the build sequence and schedules. You will conduct DFMA and PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design, build, and test and accelerate rocket engine development.
What You Will Do
- Develop new turbomachinery component manufacturing processes
- Drive and enhance turbomachinery assembly processes
- Translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into fully functional hardware
- Define how to prepare turbopumps for test, qualification, and flight
- Identify, develop, and deploy new manufacturing methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build schedule
- Conduct DFMA and PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design, build, and test
- Develop manufacturing work instructions for receiving inspection, fabrication, assembly, test, integration, and refurbishment
- Lead manufacturing and build sequences, and support schedule development of hardware throughout the entire manufacturing process
- Perform engineering drawing review and provide final approval for manufacturing
- Develop process control measures and evaluation through statistical analysis
- Define and support repair and rework activities of turbomachinery hardware
- Design, procure, install, and integrate custom manufacturing equipment
- Interface with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure proper manufacturing, processing, packaging, and delivery
- Support and perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions
- Design proper material handling and packaging to protect hardware throughout the build and test process
- Handle hardware configuration and maintain pedigree throughout the entire build and test process
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university
- 3+ years of applicable experience
- Engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing
- Direct experience manufacturing hardware including castings, forgings, additively manufactured components, welding, machining, cleaning, non-destructive testing methods, tight tolerance assembly, leak testing, and final acceptance testing of integrated hardware
- Experience developing or starting new manufacturing processes
- Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills including CAD, scheduling, issue tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct turbomachinery manufacturing and manufacturing engineering experience in any industry including rocket engines, jet engines, land-based gas turbines, oil and gas, or automotive
- Experience with finish machining of additively manufactured (AM) components
- Background in turbomachinery component machining or similar rotating hardware with tight tolerances and complex geometries
- Experience with in-process probing, on-machine measurement, and adaptive machining techniques
- Machining fixture design experience for thin-wall, distortion-sensitive aerospace components
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- Experience with manufacturing processes including machining, assembly, welding, brazing, heat-treat, non-destructive test, or precision clean
Work Details
- Location: Huntsville, AL
- Relocation provided
- Travel expected up to 20% of the time
- Shifts available: D Shift (Friday-Sunday, 5pm to 5am)
