About this role

Join the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. You will provide materials and processes engineering support across the full lifecycle, from design phase through manufacturing and qualification, ensuring all parts and systems meet spacecraft requirements for lunar surface missions.

What you will do

  • Provide M&P engineering support for aerospace grade materials including aluminum, steel, inconel, copper, and bronze; and processes such as forming, extrusion, plating, coating, welding, brazing, anodization, and passivation.
  • Provide design engineering support for mechanical systems and mechanism assemblies to meet all vehicle system requirements.
  • Execute characterization and qualification efforts related to materials and processes.
  • Review production drawings for large complex assemblies against established requirements and document findings.
  • Release engineering drawings for parts and assemblies as M&P signatory.
  • Evaluate and select lubricants, dry-film coatings, and surface treatments for vacuum, cryogenic, and high-cycle-life applications.
  • Characterize friction, wear, and lubrication behavior through analysis and laboratory testing.
  • Support M&P efforts including specification development, supplier qualification, First Article Inspection, mechanical testing, and customer updates.
  • Develop internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
  • Work with cross-functional teams across the Lunar organization and other business units.
  • Travel to support development and testing at Blue Origin and vendor sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum B.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 6 or more years of demonstrated M&P Engineering experience on a production space program.
  • Demonstrated expertise in tribology, including lubrication science, surface coatings, and wear mechanisms.
  • Experience with solid film and liquid lubricants for space and vacuum environments.
  • Experience in materials and manufacturing process review, selection, development, and qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis such as MMPDS, MAPTIS, or CMH-17.
  • Experience organizing and managing materials and process-related data in company accessible databases.

Desired qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.
  • Experience planning and executing material allowables or qualification programs.

Compensation

Base Pay Range (varies by location):
Colorado: $110,938 - $155,313
Washington: $121,023 - $169,432
