About the role
You'll join Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission to enable millions of people living and working in space. This Mission Design Engineer role focuses on trajectory analysis, orbital mechanics, and mission design for the Sunrise constellation of orbital data centers.
What you'll do
- Develop spacecraft delta-V budgets, propellant budgets, and maneuver plans
- Design Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) operations sequences
- Develop collision avoidance capabilities and end-of-life deorbit phase plans
- Refine constellation geometry, including spacecraft spacing and orbital altitudes
- Conduct collision analysis, orbital debris vulnerability assessment, and reentry safety planning
- Work with New Glenn launch team to select optimal deployment targets
- Collaborate with propulsion team to define necessary propulsion capabilities
- Support mission operations team with orbital geometry analysis for communications link studies
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline
- Strong fundamentals in orbital mechanics and spacecraft trajectories
- Applied experience with standard mission design tools such as STK, Copernicus, or Monte
- Understanding of FCC license requirements for demise and operation, and associated tools
- Strong written and visual communication skills
- Experience programming engineering software/analysis tools such as Matlab and Python, or similar tools
Preferred qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or related field with emphasis on orbital mechanics, mission design, or astrodynamics
- Experience using generative AI tools to expedite and automate your workflow
- Experience with low-thrust trajectory design
- Knowledge of spacecraft attitude determination and control
- Experience working in a fast-paced spacecraft, flexible engineering environment
- Understanding of orbital debris and reentry burnup analysis
- Hands-on experience with spacecraft operations
Additional requirements
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to support critical project milestones
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible for authorization under U.S. export regulations
Compensation
Base pay range for Colorado applicants: $119,814.00 - $167,738.55. Other site ranges may differ.
