Role Overview

As a Mission Operations Engineer II, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the readiness and flawless execution of on-orbit flight operations for Blue Ring spacecraft. You'll develop operational concepts, produce critical operations products, and provide on-console support during early on-orbit mission phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to mission planning, operations concepts, tools, and processes for real-time spacecraft and ground system operation
  • Develop detailed operations procedures, executables, telemetry displays, technical documentation, and other products in multidisciplinary teams
  • Drive operations toward increasing efficiency and reliability through ground system automation and AI/ML technologies
  • Conduct testing and validation of operations products using hardware and software simulation environments
  • Support systems engineering in developing spacecraft concept of operations
  • Create detailed test procedures to validate end-to-end system capabilities
  • Analyze and assess ground station selection for optimal communications availability
  • Support communications spectrum licensing efforts with regulatory authorities
  • Support mission readiness activities including rehearsals, timeline development, and post-launch testing
  • Provide on-console support during spacecraft launch and early orbit phase from Blue Origin's mission control facilities
  • Monitor spacecraft state-of-health, perform trending and analyses, and track configurations
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of on-orbit anomalies
  • Foster continuous improvement by contributing and implementing lessons-learned

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Computer Science, Electrical, Systems, or related field
  • 3+ years of proven experience in spacecraft operations development and execution, including real-time support for on-orbit operations
  • Expertise in one or more areas: spacecraft operations product development, real-time operations support, hosted or separable payload operations, mission planning and timeline development, spacecraft telemetry trending, ground system architecture, space-to-ground communications, or operations automation and AI/ML application
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and build positive professional relationships
  • U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted as refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Security Clearance
  • M.S. in Space Systems, Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering
  • On-console experience as a Spacecraft Controller
  • Direct support for commercial or government spacecraft operations organization
  • Experience with multi-manifest spacecraft missions and hosted or separable payloads
  • Proficiency with Python and/or command-and-control scripting languages
  • Experience with virtualized Ground Software including Command and Control, Mission Planning, Flight Dynamics, Electronic Procedures, and Software Simulators
  • Experience with mission planning and contact planning tools
  • Experience with scrum methodology and agile product development
  • Full development lifecycle experience for space systems ground segments
  • Mission analysis, flight planning and timeline development
  • Design and evaluation of operational readiness tests with hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop simulators
  • Operational fault and anomaly management
  • System safety analyses including Functional Hazard Assessments, Failure Modes and Effects and Criticality Analyses, and Fault Tree Analysis

Location and Work Arrangement

Based in Reston, VA or Denver, CO with relocation provided. On-console shift work at Reston expected up to 20% of the time.

Compensation

Base pay range: VA $107,136.00 to $149,990.40, CO $98,208.00 to $137,491.20.
