About this role
As a Senior Avionics Systems Engineer within the Lunar Permanence team, you will develop the Blue Moon landers and associated infrastructure for transporting crew and cargo to the lunar surface. You will work within the Avionics Command and Data Handling (C&H) team on hardware/software integration and network architecture design for crewed landers.
What you will do
- Contribute to or lead C&H architecture trade studies, concept development, verification planning, vehicle integration, and operations support
- Analyze, manage, and interpret C&H subsystem requirements and flow down to component specifications
- Generate verification and validation plans and work with Integration and Test teams to ensure requirements are met
- Develop and manage network architecture for multiple subsystems, ensuring deterministic performance and budget compliance
- Develop and manage C&H fault tree analyses and reliability analyses across system lifecycle
- Produce technical writing including specifications, interface definitions, and analysis documentation
- Contribute to design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) and ensure technical artifacts meet quality standards
- Provide technical mentorship and peer review within the avionics engineering team
What you need
- B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical subject
- 8 or more years relevant experience in full lifecycle development of avionics systems: requirements, design, integration, test, and operations
- Strong knowledge of systems engineering practices, integration processes, and mission/safety critical systems
- Understanding of requirements definition, decomposition, and flow-down; circuit design; interface definition; hardware specifications; and verification
- Demonstrated expertise delivering complex, safety critical C&H or similarly integrated avionics systems with multiple subsystems and networked interfaces
- Demonstrated expertise configuring and managing time-sensitive, deterministic networks such as Time Sensitive Networking, ARINC 664, or Time Triggered Ethernet
- Demonstrated expertise with Network/Precision Time Protocol and layer 2/3 networking (Ethernet, VLANs, QoS, IP, TCP/UDP, routing)
- Functional understanding of common electrical digital and analog interfaces (Serial Bus Communications, Video, Audio, Ethernet, Analog Sensors)
- Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic environment and deliver results-oriented solutions
Desired experience
- M.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems, Software, Electrical, or related technical subject
- Experience with human-rated spacecraft
- Experience with full spacecraft design life cycle
- Experience developing and delivering integrated, space qualified hardware/software components
- Experience with network topologies, architectures, and design principles
- Experience with spacecraft communication protocols (CCSDS)
- Experience with systems safety design practices
- Experience with electrical architecture diagramming tools including MS Visio
- Experience with software tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Creo, Jama, Cameo, Confluence, and JIRA
Compensation and benefits
Base pay range for Washington applicants: $156,802.00 to $219,522.45 per year. Other site ranges may differ.
