About the role

You will contribute to hardware engineering for the Guidance Navigation and Control (GN&C) subsystem of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lunar lander. Working with vehicle systems engineering, mechanical design, mission operations, integration and test teams, you will develop navigation hardware requirements, execute performance and reliability trade studies, and support integration, test, installation, alignment and verification throughout the program lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Develop navigation hardware requirements from system-level specifications down to subsystem and component levels, with verification methods
  • Support navigation hardware configuration design through design studies and performance trades
  • Lead procurement, vendor coordination, delivery, acceptance, installation, verification, validation, qualification and certification of navigation hardware
  • Plan and execute testing including flight tests, thermal vacuum tests, and vibration tests to validate system specifications and establish sensor performance specs
  • Support test and verification campaigns for navigation hardware
  • Develop and execute component-level navigation test programs: sensor characterization, modeling, and integrated on-vehicle testing
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, on-vehicle functional testing, and flight testing

Required qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in engineering or related field; preference for Aerospace and Electrical engineering
  • Validated experience with one or more GN&C hardware types: inertial navigation units (gyros, accelerometers), GPS receivers, navigation cameras, star-trackers, lidars, or EO/IR sensors
  • Experience leading integration and test activities in cleanroom environments, including optical surface contamination control and inspection standards
  • Operational knowledge of inertial and relative navigation sensors
  • Demonstrated experience in verification and test of navigation systems
  • Proficiency creating avionics requirements, procurement specifications and statements of work
  • Experience with spacecraft avionics communications protocols (RS-422, Spacewire, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of IPC Class 3 Space Addendum Standards

Desired qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace engineering or equivalent
  • Development experience with spacecraft GN&C or avionics systems
  • Sensor procurement experience
  • Design, build, test or flight experience with space vehicles
  • Planetary spacecraft navigation development knowledge
  • Spaceflight avionics experience
  • Hardware-in-the-loop simulation experience
  • Flight test experience with spacecraft navigation or avionics
  • Radiation testing and analysis (cumulative dose damage and single event effects)
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing experience
  • Alignment metrology experience (position and orientation measurements)
  • Lab test equipment experience (power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, data acquisition)
  • Generation of interface control drawings (ICDs) using CAD software
  • System engineering and configuration leadership skills
  • Windchill, Jama, and DOORS Next Generation experience
