About the role

You will join the Systems and Avionics Center of Excellence within Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), providing technical support to Blue Origin program personnel and the Radiation Effects team. From mission inception to operation, you will help ensure success of Blue Origin's systems by engaging program leadership and engineers to drive intelligent system design, part selection, and analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Design Validation and Engineering Support: Contribute to validation of space program designs with respect to radiation control plans, requirements, implementation, and verification. Provide design engineering support for avionics and electrical systems.
  • Circuit Analysis and Mitigation Leadership: Lead program design personnel through simulation and verification of digital, analog, and mixed-signal circuit performance under radiation effects. Recommend mitigation techniques to meet performance requirements.
  • Technical Contribution and Analysis: Analyze impacts of space radiation on avionics and materials, including SEE rates, testing requirements, and failure analysis. Incorporate radiation effects test data and analysis results into avionics designs.
  • Documentation and Decision Support: Generate thorough part-level, circuit-level, and system-level radiation effects analysis documentation.
  • Automation and Tooling Leadership: Develop and champion reusable scripts, tools, and AI-assisted workflows that improve efficiency and consistency of radiation effects analysis across the team.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Contribute to group-, program-, and company-wide knowledgebase for radiation effects on avionics and materials.

Minimum qualifications

  • B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Nuclear Science, or related field with 4+ years of experience in design, analysis, and/or testing for radiation effects on electronics and materials.
  • Strong familiarity with effects of ionizing/non-ionizing radiation on electronics, discrete/integrated circuits (transistors, logic, memories, microcontrollers, FPGAs, etc.), and industry-standard radiation effects analyses (environment definition, SEECA, TID, DDD).
  • Noteworthy experience performing or overseeing electrical circuit analysis and implementation of radiation effects mitigations.
  • Noteworthy experience with standard radiation environment modeling tools (IRENE, OMERE, SPENVIS, OLTARIS, CREME96) and application of fundamental statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale automation and AI-assisted tooling that extends beyond individual use, improving workflow efficiency for the broader radiation effects team.
  • Strong familiarity with radiation effects testing methodologies (SEE, TID, DDD).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with noteworthy experience presenting radiation requirements, results, and plans to peers and customers.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight regarding radiation effects on electronics.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive cross-team relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, current Green Card holder, or individual lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum. Domestic travel required; occasional international travel possible.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience using commercial/automotive parts in radiation environments and producing program-deliverable documentation (control plans, test plans/reports, design reviews, system-level analyses).
  • Experience leading technical projects from inception to completion.
  • Familiarity with hardware schematics and circuit functions based on design documentation.
  • Familiarity with radiation transport and analysis tools (MCNP, FASTRAD, GEANT4).
  • Familiarity with radiation assessments and mitigation for human space crews, and radiation effects on spacecraft materials.
  • Familiarity with radiation test laboratory equipment (power supplies, DAQ systems, electronic loads, SMUs, etc.) and general electronics lab skills (soldering, oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers).
  • Familiarity with rad-tolerant and rad-hard offerings of space electronics providers.
  • Proficiency with relevant languages, platforms, and protocols (Python, C, GitLab, SQL, I2C, SPI).

Compensation

Base pay range varies by location:

  • VA applicants: $121,023.00 to $169,432.20
  • CO applicants: $110,938.00 to $155,312.85
  • WA applicants: $121,023.00 to $169,432.20
  • Other site ranges may differ
