About New Glenn

New Glenn is a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

The Role

As Senior Avionics Hardware Design Engineer, you will be responsible for avionics controller hardware architecture for various spaceflight systems. Working in a small, accomplished team of experts, you will contribute across all aspects of avionics engineering product development: architectural definition, hardware design, and software development including design and verification.

You will work in fast-paced and often uncertain environments, contributing innovative solutions while demonstrating technical competence, personal leadership, and attention to detail. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop avionics hardware (boards and integrated assemblies) across the complete product lifecycle: concept, requirements definition, design, prototyping, verification (power-on, functional, acceptance and qualification testing) and production release.
  • Design analog and digital boards that interact with avionics systems including power electronics, compute, networking, antennas, sensors and electromechanical/electrohydraulic actuators. Conduct analysis, schematic capture, layout, design review, test/verification and release.
  • Support avionics architecture trade studies, analyses, performance characterization and specification, device selection, and controller roadmap direction.
  • Support risk analyses, failure modes effects and criticality analyses (FMECA), design for test/manufacture/cost (DFx), and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.
  • Participate in program level technology development, mission assurance and safety initiatives, and avionics development process improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field with 10+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware development.
  • Direct hands-on experience developing sophisticated commercial or aerospace electronic assemblies (designing custom cards or integrating COTS hardware).
  • Direct hands-on experience with analog, digital and mixed-signal circuit analysis, simulation, design, test, debug, signal integrity, power, grounding and board layout.
  • Experience with analog, power electronics, digital filters, signal conditioning and signal processing using discrete components.
  • Familiarity with sophisticated computational devices (combinational and sequential logic) to supervise sensors and control actuators, including design, development and verification.
  • Excellent technical communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in related engineering or technical field with 10+ years of direct experience in electronics hardware development.
  • Proven expertise designing high-reliability, safety-critical, Class 2/3 board assemblies with familiarity with IPC 6xx and NASA-STD-8739.n (or similar) standards.
  • Proficiency using Altium/Cadence OrCAD/Allegro (or similar tools) to design complex aerospace boards and experience working with external board manufacturing and assembly vendors.
  • Exposure to designing safety or critically important aerospace flight hardware aligned with DO-254.
  • Exposure to development of high-reliability, radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened flight hardware for prolonged exposure to extreme space environments.

Compensation and Benefits

Base pay range for Washington applicants: $156,802.00 - $219,522.45. Other site ranges may differ.

Benefits include: medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with company match up to 5%, education support program, stock options for all regular employees (20+ hours/week), and up to four weeks paid time off per year plus up to 14 company-paid holidays.

Employment Requirements

Applicants for employment at Blue Origin must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Blue's Standard Background Check is required for all positions.
