Senior Embedded Software Engineer (IV) - Lunar Permanence Verified today
About This Role
You will be a core member of the Avionics organization, designing and verifying embedded software for lunar vehicle avionics systems. This is a hardware-heavy software role: you will read datasheets, understand register maps, reason through performance tradeoffs, and debug in the lab with real spaceflight hardware.
Your software will configure and control integrated avionics products including Command & Data Handling (C&DH), Electrical Power Systems (EPS), Cameras, Lidars, Radars, Radios, Network Switches, and similar systems built with FPGAs, microcontrollers, and advanced SoC devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including driver development
- Bare-metal and OS-level programming for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking/communication
- Hands-on debugging with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers on avionics spaceflight hardware
- Participate in design concepts and reviews, focusing on hardware/software partitioning
- Perform benchmark analysis and characterize hardware performance
- Bring up and utilize HW-accelerators in modern SoC devices (encoders, decoders, encryption engines, image signal processing cores)
- Scripting and Linux development with development kits and sensor modules
- Implement embedded software for interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, AMBA
- Develop boot and software-based fault-tolerance strategies
- Author internal documentation and participate in design reviews and requirements generation
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field
- 10+ years of experience in above fields
- Strong embedded software design and development in C/C++/Rust with Linux scripting
- Strong debugging skills using cross hardware/software techniques and tools (GDB, XSDB, GRMON, Logic Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, Wireshark)
- Experience with single-stepping through code, Assembly, memory probing, and I/O
- Strong background in computer architecture, memory buses, cache, DMA, CPU execution pipelines
- Experience with version control systems (Git)
- Ability to work well in a team and independently with minimal direction
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field
- 12+ years of experience in above fields
- Previous experience building space avionics and/or space software systems
- Experience with DO-178 and companion documents certification guidelines
- FPGA development (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog)
- Software for HW-accelerated functions (encryption/decryption, encoder/decoder, image signal processor, GPU)
- Data analysis and post-processing tools (Matlab, Python, open-source Linux tools)
- Agile development methods
- Kernel and driver development
Compensation
Colorado applicants: $181,626.00 - $254,275.35. Washington applicants: $197,529.00 - $276,539.55. Other site ranges may differ.
Location & Travel
Multiple locations available. Relocation provided. Up to 20% travel may be required to support hardware deliveries, meetings, and reviews.
