Blue Origin is pioneering space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network delivering symmetrical data speeds up to 6 Tbps globally. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically-interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO).
The Role
As a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer on the Spacecraft Bus Avionics team, you will design, implement, and verify embedded software for mission-critical spaceflight systems. You will work directly with avionics hardware engineers developing integrated products including Command and Data Handling (C&DH), Electrical Power Systems (EPS), cameras, and similar components. These are built with modern FPGAs, microcontrollers, and advanced System-on-Chip devices.
This is a hardware-heavy software role. You must be comfortable reading hardware datasheets, understanding register maps, making performance tradeoffs, and debugging in the lab. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and often work on multiple embedded software efforts simultaneously.
Responsibilities
- Develop Board Support Package (BSP) software for new hardware, including driver development
- Bare-metal or OS-level programming for hardware initialization, control, embedded data processing, and networking/communication
- Hands-on work with avionics spaceflight hardware, including debugging with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG debuggers
- Participate in design concepts and reviews, with attention to hardware and software partitioning
- Perform benchmark analysis and deploy benchmarking code to characterize hardware performance
- Bring up and utilize HW-accelerators in modern SoC devices (encoders, decoders, encryption engines, image signal processing cores)
- Scripting, Linux development, and hands-on work with development kits and sensor modules
- Define and implement embedded software for interfaces: I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP, UDP, GMSL, SpaceWire, CameraLink, Aurora, AXI, AMBA
- Develop boot and software-based fault-tolerance strategies
- Publish internal documents, participate in design reviews, review and generate requirements
- Learn new skills, languages, and debug/development tools as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related technical field
- 7+ years experience in the above fields
- Strong embedded software design and development skills in C/C++/Rust with Linux (or similar) scripting experience
- Strong debugging skills using cross hardware/software techniques and tools: GDB, XSDB, GRMON, Logic Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, Wireshark; experience single-stepping through code, reading assembly, probing memory, and driving I/O
- Strong background in computer architecture, understanding memory buses, cache, DMA, CPU execution pipelines
- Experience with version control systems (Git)
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related technical field
- 10+ years experience in the above fields
- Previous experience building space avionics and/or space software systems
- Experience with DO-178 and companion documents certification guidelines
- Experience with FPGA development (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog)
- Experience with software for hardware-accelerated functions (encryption/decryption blocks, encoder/decoder blocks, image signal processor, GPU)
- Experience with data analysis and post-processing tools: Matlab, Python, open-source Linux tools
- Experience with agile development methods
- Experience with kernel and driver development
- Ability to work well in a team and independently with minimal direction
Compensation and Location
Base Pay Range:
- CA applicants: $156,802 - $219,522
- CO applicants: $144,179 - $201,850
- WA applicants: $156,802 - $219,522
