About the role

You'll lead a dedicated engineering team responsible for all engine avionics software products at Blue Origin Engines. As the single-threaded leader for your scope, you manage project execution, drive cost-effective delivery, oversee risk identification and mitigation, and escalate issues to leadership when needed. Close collaboration with Enterprise functions is essential to meet program objectives.

You oversee technical quality, develop technical plans to meet customer requirements and internal standards, and ensure all outputs and documentation meet quality assurance criteria. You'll manage complex interdisciplinary tasks, foster teamwork, and provide clear technical direction.

This role includes full people management: hiring, developing, and coaching talent, and supporting a positive, productive team culture aligned with HR policies.

Key responsibilities

Product Delivery:

  • Manage project scope for scrappy, cost-effective execution while maintaining a tight grip on deliverables needed to meet program objectives
  • Establish common software architecture and manage product roadmaps for each program's software product
  • Identify and manage technical and programmatic risks and opportunities, including technical, scope, asset and safety risks specific to program execution. Develop mitigation plans and collaborate with peers and program leaders to drive outcomes to acceptable levels
  • Coordinate with Enterprise functions such as Software Quality Assurance, Safety and Mission Assurance, and Enterprise Technology to drive cost and cycle time improvements and meet delivery objectives
  • Track team execution and unit product lifecycle cost
  • Create frameworks to develop and collect project data; use data to inform and monitor key project metrics
  • Partner with other Business Units and centralized Blue software teams on driving software, process, tool commonality and efficiency

Technical Leadership:

  • Develop and oversee the technical plan, ensuring alignment with negotiated customer requirements and internal design criteria
  • Own the overall lifecycle of all avionics software products from development through qualification, rate production, and successful cost-optimized commercial flight operations
  • Manage interdisciplinary engineering tasks for overall system success
  • Ensure quality of engineering outputs, provide technical direction and guidance to the team
  • Support requirement decomposition and allocation, systems engineering, technical design, analysis, and verification and validation. Manage and align interfaces between customers and project technical efforts

Functional Management:

  • Oversee the full lifecycle of employees including talent acquisition, employee development, and performance management when needed
  • Foster an environment of continuous growth and learning while ensuring compliance with HR processes and policies

Minimum qualifications

  • Proven track record of leading and managing teams to deliver complex safety critical embedded software products
  • Minimum B.S. degree in Engineering or technical field; or in lieu of a technical degree, significant demonstrated experience leading teams designing and developing complex engineered products
  • 8+ years of experience in a relevant engineering field, with significant experience in avionics and/or embedded software product development and maintenance
  • 3+ years of project management and/or management experience
  • Basic knowledge across relevant engineering disciplines, including requirements negotiation, design, development, analysis, verification, and vehicle integration
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with resource and budget management and reporting
  • Experience with Agile, IMP-level scheduling, risk management, configuration management, and requirements management processes
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and drive continuous improvement
  • Familiarity with industry-leading software development tools
  • Hands-on experience with the development lifecycle of embedded software
  • Experience in planning and executing test programs for software systems
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain software architecture and product and component roadmaps

Compensation and location

Base pay range for Washington applicants: $197,004.00 to $275,805.60. Other site ranges may differ.
