Senior Systems Integration Engineer, Battery Systems Verified today

Blue Origin · Seattle, WA · Electronics · first seen 2026-10-16

The Role

As Senior Systems Integration Engineer for Battery Systems, you will be the primary technical interface between Blue Origin's battery organization and all company programs. You own battery integration from early concept through operations, ensuring programs use proven off-the-shelf products where possible and commission custom solutions only when necessary.

Your success is measured in reuse and speed. Every program that adopts a qualified existing battery instead of building one-off saves the company development cost, qualification time, schedule risk, and engineering effort. You will also aggregate lessons across integrations to build the battery product roadmap that tells the organization what to build next.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as primary technical interface between battery organization and all Blue Origin programs, engaging early in concept and proposal phases
  • Elicit, define, and negotiate battery and interface requirements with programs, including load and duty cycle profiles, energy and power needs, environments, mass and volume constraints, mission life, redundancy, and safety and human-rating requirements
  • Develop and manage standard interface control documents (ICDs) covering electrical, mechanical, thermal, data, and ground support interfaces
  • Perform battery sizing and trade studies, including load profile analysis, energy and power margin assessment, thermal and cycle life implications, and mass, volume, and cost trades
  • Recommend cell chemistry and battery technology for each application, clearly explaining trades and risks
  • Promote and defend Blue Origin's catalog of qualified off-the-shelf battery products, guiding programs to reuse and pushing back on unnecessary custom development
  • Own the battery product roadmap: aggregate demand across all programs, identify gaps, build business cases for new products, and prioritize with design, test, and manufacturing teams
  • Create and maintain product datasheets, selection guides, standard ICDs, sizing tools, application notes, and reference designs
  • Define and manage the exception path when off-the-shelf products do not fit, establishing deviation and waiver criteria or building the case for new development
  • Support programs through vehicle integration, test, and operations, reviewing charge and discharge operations, BMS and power system interfaces, ground handling, storage, and transportation plans
  • Provide inputs to Supply Chain and program planning on lead times, quantities, obsolescence, and forward demand
  • Capture lessons learned and recurring program pain points and feed them into product improvements and roadmap decisions

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 7 or more years of direct experience in battery, power system, or electrical systems integration engineering
  • Demonstrated experience sizing battery systems from application requirements, including load profile analysis and energy and power margin assessment
  • Strong working knowledge of lithium-ion cell selection, chemistry trades, performance and aging behavior, and safety considerations
  • Experience owning interfaces and interface control documentation between a component or subsystem and a larger vehicle or system
  • Experience in a cross-program, applications, or customer-facing technical role where you had to influence decisions you did not control
  • Ability to distill complex technical trades into clear recommendations for engineers, program managers, and executives
  • Highly organized team player with excellent technical communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs
  • Ability to travel to and work at remote sites supporting integration, commissioning, and training

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • 3 or more years in space applications; experience with human-rated systems
  • Prior applications engineering or product line engineering role at a cell manufacturer, battery integrator, or OEM
  • Experience owning or contributing to a technology or product roadmap
  • Familiarity with spacecraft and launch vehicle electrical power system architecture, including BMS, charge control, and power distribution
  • Experience with requirements management and systems engineering tools and processes (DOORS, Cameo, Jama, or similar)
  • Experience with battery modeling and sizing tools, and scripting for analysis and tool development (Python, MATLAB)
  • Familiarity with applicable standards and requirements (e.g., NASA JSC-20793, AIAA S-122, UN 38.3)
  • Experience in development of launch vehicles or spacecraft
  • Experience with safety-critical systems development (automotive, aerospace, medical, etc.)
  • Experience across multiple portions of the product life cycle
