Solar Array Responsible Engineer-Project Sunrise Verified today
About the Role
You will serve as the Responsible Engineer for the Power Regulator product supporting Project Sunrise. The Power Regulator regulates power from the solar array, manages battery charge/discharge, and converts power from the High Voltage DC bus to low voltage DC for compute hardware.
You will own the Power Regulator as an integrated product, leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers across custom ASIC design, circuit design, electromagnetic design, board layout, thermal management, mechanical design, firmware development, manufacturing, and test. You are the technical integrator and single point of accountability from requirements definition through design, qualification, flight, and production ramp to megawatt-scale quantities initially, scaling to gigawatt scale.
Project Sunrise will be produced at constellation scale. Your design decisions directly impact manufacturing yield, unit cost, test throughput, and schedule. You will balance rigorous space-grade reliability with aggressive cost and manufacturability targets, delivering a product cost-competitive with terrestrial equivalents.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the single-threaded owner and Responsible Engineer for the Power Regulator product, leading a multidisciplinary team and owning product architecture, requirements, interfaces, and budgets from concept through production.
- Lead hands-on technical design and analysis of high-voltage, high-frequency switching power converters, including topology selection, component sizing, control strategy, schematic design, and detailed electrical, thermal, and reliability analyses.
- Own the complete hardware verification and qualification strategy, from developing test plans for prototype and flight hardware to leading anomaly investigations and ensuring the product is fully validated for the space environment.
- Drive the product's transition to high-rate manufacturing, championing Design for Manufacturability and Test, defining automated test requirements, and collaborating with production teams to achieve aggressive cost and schedule targets.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 8 or more years of hands-on experience designing, testing, and debugging switching power converters (DC/DC, DC/AC, or battery charge/discharge regulators).
- Experience as a box, assembly, or product-level Responsible Engineer (or equivalent technical lead role) with accountability for an integrated multi-card unit through integration and test.
- Design experience with high-voltage power electronics above 100V, including bus architecture, protection circuits, and PCB layout with explicit consideration for creepage, clearance, and thermal management.
- Experience selecting and sizing power semiconductors (Si, SiC, and/or GaN), gate drivers, and magnetics.
- Proficiency in performing and documenting power electronics analyses, including worst-case analysis, derating, stability, power dissipation, transient response, and reliability.
- Hands-on experience leading or substantially contributing to a hardware qualification campaign, including test plan development and anomaly resolution.
- End-to-end product development experience, from requirements definition through qualification and production release.
- Familiarity or fluency with AI tools and their application for design optimization, analysis, or requirements management.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power electronics, or a related technical field.
- Space Power Systems Expertise: Experience with solar array regulation, battery charge/discharge systems, and radiation-tolerant design practices.
- Advanced Power Conversion Expertise: Deep experience with high-frequency, wide-bandgap (GaN/SiC) converters, advanced topologies (e.g., resonant, isolated), and high-frequency magnetics design.
- Digital Control Experience: Familiarity with digital control of power converters using FPGAs, microcontrollers, or custom ASICs.
- Design for Production Experience: Background in high-volume industries (e.g., automotive, data center) with a focus on DFM/DFT, production test, and yield improvement.
- Tools Proficiency: Expertise with Altium Designer, LTspice/PLECS, and Python.
