About the role
You will ensure spacecraft data systems satisfy mission needs and support critical partners. As Spacecraft Data Systems Engineer, you provide the technical connection between flight software, spacecraft systems functions, ground operations, and test engineering. You will interpret functional requirements and command/telemetry definitions to create the complete data architecture for Blue Ring satellites, guiding data format, streams, storage development, and verification.
This role requires systems-thinking across interconnected spacecraft, ground, and operational systems. You will align data interfaces to meet mission needs while working closely with spacecraft engineers, flight software developers, spaceflight operations, and test teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead Command and Telemetry Database (CTDB) and Parameter Database development, defining file management and onboard data storage
- Manage data for spacecraft uplink, onboard command sequences, data transfer, telemetry downlink, and data prioritization within flight software and memory management
- Define data architecture strategies differentiating data placement between CTDB and Parameter data
- Develop roadmap for scalable, robust data architecture across a fleet of vehicles, anticipating future payload and mission needs
- Shape program areas including payload and spacecraft, developing techniques and processes for effective data management and handling
Minimum qualifications
- B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, applied mathematics, or related field
- 8+ years spacecraft development and operations experience
- Proven experience developing and managing Command and Telemetry Databases (CTDB) with proficiency in spacecraft telemetry, data management, and command sequencing
- Familiarity with spacecraft flight software design and architecture
- Experience with CCSDS standards, including command and telemetry formats
- Proficiency in Java, Python, JavaScript, C, or C++ with proven background in software development and automation for data solutions, including deployment to flight hardware
- Experience with Command and Control (C2) or Flight Software (FSW) software tools
- Ability to engage effectively with Integration and Test, Ground and Spaceflight Operations, and Systems Engineering teams
- Must be U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident (Green Card), or lawfully admitted as refugee or granted asylum
Preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and modern software development practices
- Proficiency in AI and machine learning techniques for data processing
- Experience with data governance, security standards, and compliance methodologies
- Deep CCSDS experience including full OSI stack understanding
- Ability to communicate complex data and software architecture to IPT leads, executives, and customers
- Domain expertise of spacecraft systems, subsystems, interfaces, and protocols (serial, 1553, Ethernet, embedded software)
- Experience debugging and identifying root cause at hardware/software boundary
- Experience with hardware testbeds and lab environments for software and system verification
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure for data deployment and orchestration
- Jira, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines
- Active TS/SCI clearance
Compensation and benefits
Base pay range varies by location: CA, WA, VA: $121,023 to $169,432.20; CO: $110,938 to $155,312.85. Other site ranges may differ.
