Role Overview

As Sr. GNC Manager for the Mk1 Lunar Lander within Blue Origin's Lunar Permanence business unit, you will serve as the single-threaded leader for the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) team, reporting to the vehicle program director. You will be accountable for team leadership, flight hardware development and delivery, GNC flight software development and delivery, and accuracy and efficiency of GNC analysis products.

Team Management

You will directly manage a team focused on guidance, navigation, and control of the Mk1 vehicle. You will take ownership of the people, processes, and tools crucial for outstanding performance in these domains. Using strong communication, listening, and empathetic leadership skills, you will lead workforce development, supervise performance and promotions, and mentor team members' careers. You will ensure your team's work products meet domain quality standards and benchmark team standards and tools with other Blue Origin business units and industry trends.

Technical Contribution

You will provide broad and deep GNC domain expertise to ensure technical products meet program requirements. You will lead and approve GNC subsystem-level technical design decisions and collaborate with other subsystem teams to ensure design coordination and vehicle performance. You will provide technical leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate GNC subsystem risks and mentor engineering teams through design, analysis, testing, delivery, and operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hire staff that continually raises performance standards
  • Coach and mentor staff in technical growth, communication, and product delivery quality and timeliness
  • Make technical, programmatic, and personnel decisions using quantitative metrics
  • Develop and manage subsystem-level budgets and schedules with calculated risk-taking to accelerate development
  • Actively integrate with all other subsystems to create efficient and integrated technical solutions
  • Establish subsystem priorities aligned with company, business unit, and vehicle-level objectives
  • Review and impact engineering changes, variances, non-conformances, problem reports, and action items
  • Develop strategic plans that leverage capabilities and hardware common across Blue Origin vehicles
  • Author reports, define plans, and clearly describe technical problems and solutions to leadership

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or related subject areas with at least 10 years of design experience
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in spacecraft GNC systems development
  • Experience in full development lifecycle of GNC subsystem on at least one aerospace program
  • Extensive experience in development and analysis of GNC algorithms and flight software
  • Experience in development and testing of navigation sensors and control actuators
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking missions
  • Experience in development of bottoms-up staffing plans, labor and hardware cost estimates, and end-to-end schedules from conceptual design to hardware/software flight certification
  • Experience in personnel management, including performance management, career growth, and establishment of individual and team expectations and goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized and capable of guiding complex technical work
  • Ability to execute in a dynamic, fast-paced, and driven work environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or related subject areas
  • Demonstrated experience leading full development lifecycle of GNC subsystem in at least one aerospace program
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge in planetary spacecraft GNC systems development
  • Experience with NASA certification of flight readiness process for a new system
  • Experience working on large complex programs with multiple partners
  • Experience with Trick and Core Flight System

Compensation

Base pay range varies by location: Colorado applicants $169,008.00 - $236,611.20; Washington applicants $183,807.00 - $257,328.75. Other site ranges may differ.
