Blue Origin is pioneering space-based communications with TeraWave, a multi-orbit satellite constellation in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO). The system will deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps using optically interconnected satellites for enterprise-grade global connectivity.
Your Role
As Sr. Mechanical Engineer for the TeraWave Spacecraft Bus, you will architect, design, and validate mechanical packaging for avionics enclosures and Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) that house electronic components. You own the mechanical design from concept through qualification and production, ensuring alignment stability, survivability through launch, and reliable on-orbit performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the entire design cycle of flight and mission-critical avionics LRUs
- Design packaging architectures and enclosure solutions optimized for performance, high reliability, and harsh space environments
- Own mechanical interface definitions, specifications, and control documents
- Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, drawings, and technical documentation
- Collaborate with electrical engineering on PCB integration, thermal and structural analyses
- Manage BOMs and configuration control throughout the product lifecycle
- Design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA)
- Build and evaluate prototype assemblies; create assembly aids and test fixtures
- Plan and conduct engineering tests including environmental testing (TVAC, thermal cycling, vibration, shock)
- Support hardware builds and review assembly instructions
- Perform failure analysis and establish root cause and corrective actions
- Support Production and Quality Engineering with material defect dispositioning
- Manage design revisions through the product lifecycle
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
- 7+ years recent experience designing ruggedized electronic enclosures or similar high-performance, high-reliability hardware
- Familiarity with static structural, modal, random vibration, and thermal analysis
- Proficiency with 3D CAD and drawings (e.g. Creo, NX, or SolidWorks); strong GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance analysis
- Experience with environmental testing including vibration, shock, thermal cycling
- Experience performing failure analysis and establishing root cause and corrective actions
- U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident (Green Card), or lawfully admitted as refugee or granted asylum
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with avionics, power regulators and distributors, or battery packaging disciplines
- Experience with aerospace, launch vehicle, or spacecraft avionics systems
- Experience with FEA tools (Ansys preferred)
- Experience with recent versions of Creo, Windchill, Ansys Mechanical
- Experience with fatigue analysis and fracture mechanics
- Experience with additional environmental testing including EMI/RFI and TVAC
- Ability to be self-directed and balance multiple projects
Compensation
Base pay range varies by location:
- Colorado applicants: $133,500 - $186,898.95
- Washington applicants: $145,188 - $203,263.20
- Other site ranges may differ
