Sr. Systems Engineer — Systems & Engineering Operations, Lunar HLS Verified today

Blue Origin · 2 Locations · Space Systems · first seen 2026-10-16

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, developing Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products for sustainable transport of crew and cargo to the lunar surface.

As a Sr. Systems Engineer on the System Definition & Certification team, you will help define the Human Landing System (HLS) that will carry astronauts to the Moon and return them safely to Orion. This dual-hatted role combines:

  • Program execution: gathering and integrating input across vehicle teams, carrying requirements to supporting infrastructure organizations, and driving projects to cost and schedule while keeping the program's technical engine running.
  • Baseline development: contributing to requirements, safety, and verification that proves the vehicle is safe to fly crew.

You will make technical status legible to leadership and help mold the baseline that status is measured against. You favour lean, tool-driven workflows over manual data movement and will build the tools that remove busywork.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in requirements, verification and validation planning, and anomaly investigation and root-cause analysis when the vehicle does not behave as designed.
  • Review deliverables for subtle flaws and gaps, not just surface correctness.
  • Develop technical requirements that major program projects must meet by translating vehicle needs from ground systems, test capabilities, and supporting infrastructure into clear, integrated requirements.
  • Serve as the flight-side interface carrying those requirements to delivery organizations.
  • Develop and refine operational and project-execution processes that improve efficiency and team communication.
  • Plan and execute major program milestones such as CDR, including readiness tracking, entrance/exit criteria, scheduling, and logistics coordination.
  • Maintain and improve customer interactions, review processes, procedures, and documentation standards for Lunar programs.
  • Own technical progress tracking and burndown across the program including decision tickets, TPMs, and curated views for daily standups and program meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in aerospace, systems, or a related engineering field (M.S. preferred); advanced degree may substitute for a portion of experience requirement.
  • 8+ years of relevant systems engineering and/or engineering-operations experience in a technical field with complex regulatory environment (aerospace, defense, nuclear, etc.).
  • Experience developing requirements, safety, and V&V baseline in a systems-engineering context.
  • Experience planning and executing projects to cost and schedule including milestones, risk, and cross-team coordination.
  • Track record of building lean, tool-driven processes and earning adoption without relying on direct authority.
  • Working fluency with SE and program tooling (e.g. Jama, Cameo, Windchill, DOORS, Jira, Confluence) and judgment to drive tool decisions that reduce manual effort.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills; comfortable working across engineering, program, and leadership levels.
  • Ability to identify gaps in processes and independently develop and implement solutions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in an engineering or technical discipline.
  • Human spaceflight, crewed vehicle, launch vehicle, or other complex integrated-system experience with demonstrated ownership of complex, cross-functional operational processes with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or co-leading formal engineering reviews and managing associated documentation, artifacts, and customer contractual requirements.
  • Experience from another safety-critical or regulated industry (medical devices, commercial aviation, nuclear, automotive) supporting requirements, verification, or safety baseline for a major product area.
  • Experience as a customer-facing technical interface to NASA or comparable government/prime customer.
  • History of introducing tools or methods adopted at scale that measurably cut cycle time or error rate.

  • Base pay range for CO applicants: $133,500-$186,898.95.
  • Base pay range for WA applicants: $145,188-$203,263.20.
