Structural Test Engineer III - Lunar Permanence Verified today
About this role
This position is part of Blue Origin's Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Moon landers and related products. You will support the mission to return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond Earth. You'll lead structural test campaigns and directly impact the safety and success of lunar landing systems.
What you'll do
- Lead a small team of early career engineers through an entire structural test campaign
- Participate in the assembly and test of development and flight hardware including planning, execution, data reduction and analysis
- Lead daily test operations, operate test consoles, direct technician work and coordinate with internal customers
- Identify and assist in design, procurement and integration of Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE)
- Perform root cause, system hazard analysis and failure investigations
- Troubleshoot issues that arise during testing, including managing procedural redlines and updates during test campaigns
- Coordinate test crews, support equipment and configurations for testing
- Participate in test readiness reviews, pre and post-test briefings, and post-test reviews
- Enforce safety policies during test planning and operations
- Find opportunities for safety improvements and cost savings
- Proactively prepare status updates and communicate with internal teams and direct customers
What we're looking for
- BS or MS in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related technical discipline
- 5 or more years of experience with test-specific work in at least one of: loads, life cycle, proof, modal, shock or acoustic testing
- Ability to assign tasking, delegate workload and supervise a team of 2-5 engineers
- Experience working on dispersed rapid development teams and driving process development
- Basic understanding of design fundamentals including requirements identification, material selection, input definition, form factors, interface definition, and environmental considerations
- Intermediate proficiency in 3D CAD programs (Creo Pro/E preferred) including drawing creation
- Intermediate proficiency in strength and mechanics of materials
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with space vehicle component or integrated vehicle testing including structural, environmental and performance
- Experience participating in NASA technical reviews
- Experience with test facility instrumentation and Data Acquisition and Control Systems, including troubleshooting analog and digital hardware with bench measurement equipment
- Understanding of or experience with hazardous operations
- Experience with control actuators, deployable devices (doors, landing gear, sensors, etc.), hydraulic system components, separation systems, or other mechanical systems
- Familiarity with sensors including linear variable differential transformers, strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers, and pressure transducers
Working conditions
- Relocation may be provided
- Travel expected up to 25% of the time
- During integrated vehicle testing, night and/or weekend work will be required
- Interviews will include a technical assessment
