Role Overview
As a Test Engineer in Launch Site One Test Operations, you will work on the Maintenance team supporting thousands of components and dozens of sub-systems across the GEEx, VEEx, and XEEx Engine Test Stand facilities. You will maintain structural, fluid, and electrical systems, support hardware maintenance and initial builds for stand upgrades, and ensure safe and repeatable operations for engine development, qualification, and acceptance testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Author work instructions for safe maintenance of test facility hardware, including disassembly, inspection, and assembly of mechanical and electro-mechanical components
- Define preventative maintenance requirements and identify support equipment needed for facility components
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for permanent problem resolution
- Support functional testing of valves, filters, regulators, and other components using high pressure pneumatics, cryogenics, and hydraulics
- Coordinate with external vendors on preventative maintenance and repair efforts
- Participate in Test Readiness and Risk Assessment Reviews to ensure compliance with Blue Origin Health and Safety Manual requirements
- Provide technical support for new designs considering maintainability and operability
- Perform certified operator duties to support return to service post-maintenance and system upgrade activations
- Establish training curriculum for engineers and technicians; proctor training as needed
- Manage equipment and spare inventory strategies to support stand maintenance
- Engage across geographic locations and business units for anomaly resolution, hazard assessments, design reviews, and future facility expansion planning
- Identify inefficiencies and capability gaps; advocate for and implement process improvements
- Introduce new technologies and capability improvements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- Direct experience working with rocket test facility
- 4+ years of experience in testing environment with focus on engineering and project management
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects from concept definition to full implementation
- Advanced computer skills: Windows, Microsoft Office
- Intermediate technical fundamentals in fluids and thermodynamic principles
- Strong data analysis ability and system performance disposition/recommendation skills
- Intermediate working knowledge of instrumentation: pressure transducers, thermocouples, silicon diodes, resistance temperature detectors, flow measuring devices, accelerometers
- Advanced knowledge of high pressure, cryogenic, hydraulic, pneumatic, data acquisition, and electrical power systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering standards, technical requirements, and engineering drawings
- Ability to safely work around pressurized systems up to 6,000 PSIG
- Approachable disposition, open-minded, and able to adapt to rapidly changing requirements
- Calming demeanor in high pressure situations with tenacity to resolve conflict
- Continuous improvement mindset
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Management, or Business
- Experience with Windchill or similar product lifecycle management tools
- Familiarity with CAD applications, preferably Creo
- Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, Winplot, or Advanced Excel functions (VBA, Power Query)
- Working knowledge of aerospace cleanliness specs for Clean Room and manufacturing environments
- Working knowledge of fabrication techniques for component hardware modifications
- Experience in a leadership position
- Experience with design tools and methods for facility fluid and/or electrical systems
- Operational understanding of engines and engine sub-components: turbopumps, combustion devices, valves, fluid components
Work Schedule and Location
This is a first shift position based in Van Horn, TX, but will require ability to perform duties outside normal shift hours as needed. Schedule operates as 8 days on and 6 days off rotation (A or B rotation). Up to 10% travel may be required to support other Blue Origin sites during surge needs and for professional development.
Relocation and Financial Incentives
Relocation is provided. The West Texas site in Van Horn offers eligible employees additional financial incentives to supplement competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance. Eligibility is based on ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn or travel there a minimum of 50% of the time.
