Test Engineer IV (Senior) - Motion Control, Honeybee Robotics Verified today
About the Role
As a Senior Test Engineer in the Motion Control Business Unit (MCBU) at Honeybee Robotics, you will serve as a senior technical authority within the Test Department. You'll lead complex test campaigns from planning through execution and closeout for Engineering Development, Qualification, and Flight hardware. With an electrical engineering background, you will design, develop, and maintain Electrical/Electronic Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) that stimulates, simulates, and monitors motion control hardware under test. You'll operate with a high degree of autonomy, mentor junior test engineers and technicians, and represent the Test Department in cross-functional design and program reviews.
Responsibilities
Test Program Leadership
- Author, review, and approve test plans, procedures, and reports in compliance with applicable standards and program requirements.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for test activities on assigned programs, coordinating across engineering, program management, quality, and customer stakeholders.
- Present test campaign plans, schedules, results, and technical findings at internal reviews, Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), and customer milestones.
EGSE Development
- Design, develop, and maintain Electrical/Electronic Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) including power supplies/simulators, battery and load simulators, breakout boxes, and signal interface racks to stimulate and monitor unit-under-test hardware during functional, performance, and environmental testing.
- Define EGSE architecture and interface requirements against flight electrical interface control documents (ICDs); perform safe-to-mate verification prior to unit-under-test integration.
- Develop and maintain EGSE schematics, wiring diagrams, and documentation to support configuration control and reuse across programs.
- Troubleshoot and repair EGSE hardware/firmware issues to minimize test campaign downtime; drive continuous improvement of EGSE reliability, modularity, and reusability across product lines.
- Collaborate with electrical design engineers on EGSE-to-flight-hardware interface compatibility, grounding/bonding, and EMI/EMC considerations.
Test Development and Execution
- Design, set up, and operate test fixtures, ground support equipment, and data acquisition systems to support functional, performance, life, and environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, shock, EMI/EMC) of motion control hardware.
- Lead troubleshooting and anomaly investigations, driving root cause analysis and corrective action through to closure; support Failure Review Boards as technical lead or subject matter expert.
- Collect, reduce, and analyze test data; identify trends and risks, and communicate findings clearly to engineering and project teams.
Mentorship and Collaboration
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior test engineers and test technicians on EGSE development, electrical test methods, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and documentation practices.
- Collaborate closely with design, systems, and quality engineers to ensure test and EGSE requirements are properly derived, allocated, and verified; provide Design-for-Test feedback on new product designs.
- Identify and drive opportunities to improve test efficiency, repeatability, and automation; contribute to continuous improvement of test infrastructure and processes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in electrical test engineering, preferably in aerospace, spaceflight, or precision electromechanical hardware.
- Demonstrated experience developing EGSE, test stands, fixtures, and GSE from concept through implementation, including schematic capture and interface documentation.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, DMMs, breakout boxes, power analyzers) and data acquisition systems.
- Proficiency in developing and executing test plans and procedures for complex electrical/electromechanical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead anomaly investigations, analyze and interpret test data, and drive resolution through structured problem-solving methods.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers/technicians and serve as a technical point of contact across a program or product line.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present technical findings to engineering, program, and customer stakeholders.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Experience testing mechanisms, actuators, gimbals, or drive assemblies.
- Test automation experience.
- Lead Test Engineer experience.
- Experience with one or more programming/scripting languages used in test automation or data analysis (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, C#).
- Familiarity with environmental test standards such as MIL-STD-810, GEVS (GSFC-STD-7000), or equivalent aerospace qualification standards, and with EMI/EMC test practices.
- Experience working in a cleanroom or controlled laboratory environment with flight or flight-like hardware.
- Familiarity with harness/cabling design and workmanship standards (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620).
- Knowledge of AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management systems and associated documentation practices.
- Experience supporting test campaigns at external test facilities or customer sites.
- Prior experience in a space hardware development environment with exposure to full product lifecycle testing (development, qualification, and acceptance).
