About the Role
You will join the Lunar Permanence business unit as a Thermal Hardware Engineer II, part of the Lunar Core Components Heat Transfer team. In this position, you will provide thermal expertise to Blue Moon lander architectures, contributing to the design, build, test, and verification of thermal hardware for lunar vehicles.
You will apply your technical expertise and leadership skills to impact safe human spaceflight, working across cross-functional teams to deliver thermal solutions for crew and cargo transport to the lunar surface.
Core Responsibilities
- Design and size thermal hardware components including heat exchangers, cold plates, and radiators
- Conduct thermal analysis and verification of spacecraft components
- Build, test, and validate thermal hardware through the development cycle
- Apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation for component-level analysis
- Develop component specifications and design documentation
- Work in cross-functional teams to deliver thermal solutions
Required Qualifications
- B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
- 3+ years of relevant thermal engineering experience
- Strong grasp of heat transfer and fluid system fundamentals
- Familiarity with heat exchangers, cold plates, radiators, and common spacecraft hardware
- Demonstrated experience designing, sizing, building, and testing hardware
- Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation processes
- Moderate CAD software experience, preferably Creo
- Familiarity with CFD simulation methods for component-level analysis
- Experience designing and testing thermal components
- Demonstrated experience in cross-functional teams
Desired Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in mechanical or aerospace engineering
- 5+ years of relevant aerospace experience
- Deep understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, and semi-passive devices like sensors and heaters
- Familiarity with standards including AS9100D, ASME, SAE, AWS, and ANSI Y14.5
- Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in application
- Vendor technical management experience
- Design for manufacturability and assembly experience
- CREO modeling and drawing creation experience
- Familiarity with Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint, including model validation and test correlation
- CFD optimization of cold plates, heat exchangers, and radiators
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools experience
Compensation and Benefits
Base pay range varies by location: CA $107,136 - $149,990.40; CO $98,208 - $137,491.20; WA $107,136 - $149,990.40. Other site ranges may differ.
