Senior Embedded Software Engineer - Spacecraft Verified today
CesiumAstro develops communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and space platforms. We are seeking a Senior Flight Software Engineer for our Internal Missions team to design and develop software for leading-edge communications satellites in a startup environment.
Your Responsibilities
- Design and implement flight software to monitor, test, and control spacecraft subsystems: attitude, command and data handling, navigation, thermal, and power
- Develop software for mission systems integration including satellites, ground stations, and mission operations centers
- Define requirements, design architecture and block diagrams, implement, review code, and validate and verify systems
- Conduct software-in-the-loop testing through all development stages
- Analyze code for efficiency, stability, and scalability
- Support quality assurance, optimize I/O performance, and provide post-production customer support
- Interface with hardware design and development engineers
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of spacecraft software engineers
- Assess third-party and open-source software for integration
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (Master's or Doctorate preferred; Master's counts as 2 years experience)
- Minimum 5 years industry experience in spacecraft software development
- Hands-on development and troubleshooting of software systems and hardware (motors, power distribution units, etc.)
- Proficiency in C, C++, Python, or other languages in aerospace context
- Strong understanding of space missions from conception through flight and disposal
- Spacecraft mission design experience: events, pointing modes, maneuver planning, sequencing, operations
- Experience with spacecraft failures in post-CDR testing and on-orbit, root cause analysis, and recovery
- Design for reliability, spaceflight redundancy, fault detection, identification, and recovery
- Space software knowledge: attitude dynamics, coordinate frame transformations, vector mathematics, radiative heat transfer, propulsion, communication systems, power systems
- Communication protocols experience (TCP/IP, UDP) for software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and spaceflight
- Embedded software experience for space missions
- Multi-threaded applications and resource management expertise
- Software release, versioning, and configuration management processes
- Configuration management tools, defect tracking, and peer review familiarity
- Continuous integration, test, and delivery systems
- Radiation tolerance considerations for automotive-grade parts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- CubeSat and SmallSat development (LEO, MEO, GEO, beyond)
- Spacecraft instrumentation, subsystems, and test lab experience
- JPL F', NASA cFS, and commercial space software frameworks
