CesiumAstro develops communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We are seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to join our Austin team.

The Role

You will own full-stack hardware development for complex electronics modules and systems. Your work spans concept development through detailed design, analysis, layout, build, test, and delivery. At this level, you will also lead teams of hardware engineers and provide technical leadership on critical designs and new products.

You will present engineering design review materials to customers and executive leadership, so strong communication is essential. Your contributions directly impact the success of the business, delivering high-reliability products for space and airborne applications with technical rigor in a startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design of complex electronics modules and systems, including high-speed digital, power electronics, and/or RF products
  • Lead teams of hardware engineers to develop new products with multiple electronics modules
  • Develop hardware architecture and requirements for complex systems
  • Perform detailed schematic design and PCB layout in Altium Designer for complex boards
  • Complete analysis including worst-case circuit, signal integrity, and power integrity analysis
  • Develop bring-up and design verification plans for new hardware and complex systems
  • Perform bring-up and verification testing of modules and integrated systems
  • Release modules and assemblies to production with Manufacturing and Test Engineering teams
  • Mentor junior and senior engineers
  • Apply cross-functional knowledge of software and mechanical design to streamline hardware development
  • Provide subject matter expertise across the company

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Minimum 8 years of industry or university research experience in board-level electronics design, analysis, and test
  • Direct experience designing high-reliability electronics and small systems for space or defense applications, including part derating, worst-case analysis, and thermal constraints
  • Experience owning the design phase of complex board-level electronics and small hardware systems, including architecture design, trade studies, key part selection, and detailed design
  • Multiple experiences delivering hardware products through production and deployment
  • Expertise in PCB layout and manufacturing, including high-density interconnect (HDI) stackup design and IPC standards
  • Expertise derisking designs with board-level signal integrity and/or power integrity simulation tools such as Ansys SIwave, ADS SIPro, or Mentor Hyperlynx
  • Expert-level proficiency in Altium and other electronics design tools
  • Extensive lab experience for bring-up and verification of new hardware with specialized lab equipment
  • Strong understanding of adjacent fields such as software and mechanical engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • Experience leading teams of hardware engineers to develop multi-module assemblies
  • Design for space radiation environments
