CesiumAstro develops communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We seek a Staff Flight Software Engineer to lead low-level and high-level software development across all phases of our product lifecycle.

What you will own

You will architect, design, develop, code, test, debug, and document space system software. Key projects include satellite flight software and mission data and operations systems. You will work on software designs from concept through production, including product roadmaps, block diagrams, detailed design, analysis, test, qualification, and in-orbit support.

Core responsibilities

  • Design and implement software to build and integrate mission systems including satellites, ground stations, and mission operations centers
  • Architect and develop space system software across the full stack: microcontrollers, low-level drivers, board support packages (BSP), and user interfaces
  • Act as a subject matter expert on space software systems and provide technical leadership
  • Review code and system designs for quality and performance
  • Analyze code for efficiency, stability, and scalability
  • Integrate and validate new product designs
  • Support software quality assurance and optimize I/O performance
  • Provide post-production and in-orbit customer support
  • Interface with hardware design and development engineers
  • Mentor junior team members
  • Assess third-party and open-source software
  • Present engineering design reviews to customers and executive leadership
  • Participate in proposal-writing efforts

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering (or Master of Science)
  • Minimum 8 years of industry software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 7 years with a Master's degree
  • Experience developing multiple flight software systems
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting software systems and hardware (motors, power distribution units, etc.)
  • Programming experience in C or C++
  • Experience integrating open-source software into integrated systems
  • Familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and peer review
  • Strong understanding of multi-threaded applications and resource management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred experience

  • Experience with aerospace applications
  • Experience with satellite operations or mission data systems, including COSMOS
  • Experience with NASA's cFS flight software framework
  • Ability to read electronics schematics and component data sheets
  • Experience with ARM processors and fully-featured microcontrollers
  • Experience designing and developing a Software Development Kit (SDK)
