The Role
As Senior Mechanical Ground Systems Engineer, you will develop ground systems infrastructure for Isar Aerospace's launch operations. You report directly to the Manager, Mechanical Ground Systems and take responsibility for mechanical subsystems across larger projects.
Your focus includes design of launch equipment such as Launch Tables, Transporter/Erector, and Hold-Down-Release Mechanisms, as well as ground support equipment for testing facilities, qualification and acceptance of propulsion systems and rocket stages.
Your Responsibilities
- Take ownership and accountability for mechanical subsystems as part of larger projects
- Manage requirements proactively between stakeholders, define Engineering Change Requests
- Mentor junior and mid-level mechanical ground systems engineers
- Design and iterate mechanical and structural subsystems using CAD tools and numerical simulations
- Create manufacturing and integration drawings including BOMs
- Perform trade-off analysis from subsystem to full architectural level
- Select and procure hardware based on requirements
- Serve as technical point of contact with external partners
- Write technical documentation, conduct design reviews and risk assessments
- Evaluate subsystems for compliance with environmental and safety regulations
- Plan commissioning procedures and support operation crews during commissioning
- Travel to construction and test sites for on-site coordination
Required Experience and Qualifications
- B.Sc./M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent
- 7+ years professional experience in mechanical or aerospace engineering
- Experience with system-level mechanical architecture of complex ground support and launch infrastructure
- Practical expertise with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Siemens NX or similar 3D CAD software including GD&T
- Advanced mechanical design and analysis across structures, mechanisms, pressure systems, fluid interfaces and dynamic environments
- Strong understanding of manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and operational constraints
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical engineering challenges
- Fluent English
- Self-sufficiency in adapting to changing priorities
- Highly organized, efficient team player with attention to detail
- Proactive and constructive communication skills
- Ability to model technical excellence for junior engineers
Bonus Qualifications
- Fluent German
- Knowledge of rocket propulsion technology and/or test facility and launch pad design
- Knowledge of mechanical aspects of process plant engineering
- Structural, thermal, vibration analysis experience in Ansys, NASTRAN or similar
- Experience with hydraulic system design
- Experience with systems designed for outdoor or offshore environments
