The Role
As RF/Electrical Engineer, you will design, analyse, optimise and enhance the nanosatellite communications payload and future constellation network. You will work across RF, electrical, mechanical and software domains in a small, hands-on team.
Core Responsibilities
- Support design of spacecraft payload hardware including single-board computers, software-defined radios, FPGAs, SoCs, processors, LNAs, filters and amplifiers
- Select and design nanosatellite antenna technologies
- Develop link budget analyses, simulations, traffic and capacity analysis, RF system design, coverage and frequency planning
- Support payload integration, testing and delivery to launch partners
- Design and plan payload testing configurations for ground and in-orbit communications performance validation
- Interface with Systems Engineering to inform constellation and network architecture based on RF performance
- Perform bench-level mechatronics work including testing, integration, assembly, programming and prototyping
- Conduct software-based systems engineering analysis
- Develop and maintain technical documentation for payload design
- Work independently and collaboratively within the team
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in RF or Electrical Engineering
- Experience developing space payload hardware and software, preferably communications systems
- Hands-on experience with software-defined radios, antennas, FPGAs, GPUs, CPUs, SoCs and single-board computers
- Programming proficiency in C++, C, Python, MATLAB or similar languages
- Experience working with Linux-based systems
Desired Skills
- VHDL or Verilog and Altera or Xilinx FPGA experience
- Electrical design software proficiency such as Altium
- Strong RF air interface knowledge and multiple access schemes (TDMA, FDMA, OFDMA, CDMA)
- Hardware and software systems integration experience
- Microcontroller and SDR programming
- Communications and networking protocols (IP, TCP/IP, Ethernet, LTE, GSM, 802.11)
- Proficiency with Linux, Windows and macOS; strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Word)
