About the role

Muon seeks a Senior Camera Systems Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA developing infrared remote sensing instruments. You will fully own the delivery of infrared camera subsystems to multiple concurrent programs. The ideal candidate is self-motivated with a versatile skill set, comfortable working across many layers of technical depth and previous experience developing camera subsystems for integration into complex electro-optical systems in fast-paced, small-team environments.

This position is hybrid, requiring on-site work in Mountain View three days per week.

Responsibilities

• Own development of visible and thermal infrared camera subsystems including generation of technical specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), trade studies, vendor technical management, performance characterization, testing, and failure mode and root cause analysis.
• Define camera test requirements, pass/fail criteria, and test strategies in partnership with hardware and test engineering teams.
• Define parameters for camera environmental qualification campaigns, including radiation testing and thermal environmental stress screening (ESS), reviewing test data and acting as technical authority on camera subsystem health.
• Support subsystem and instrument-level testing, including environmental testing (vibration, thermal-vacuum), system characterization and V&V.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of best practices, processes, tools, and methodologies in instrument development.
• Collaborate with instrument and spacecraft systems engineers, data scientists, AI&T and production teams, and program managers.

Qualifications

• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in an engineering field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of experience in a multi-disciplinary environment with demonstrated experience in imaging systems and infrared remote sensing instruments.
• Software skills in one or more languages (e.g. Python, C++).
• Experience with precision optical and mechanical metrology equipment.
• Experience with root cause analysis including data analysis and testing.
• Experience performing data analysis, post-processing, and test report generation for optical component and camera system performance.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and organization skills.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with new challenges each week.

Nice-to-have Skills

• Exposure to design and analysis of optical components and systems.
• Experience with risk management, including risk tracking and development and implementation of mitigation plans.
• Experience working in cleanroom environments.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $197,000 - $218,000 plus competitive equity grant. Full-time employees receive medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k retirement plan, short and long term disability and life insurance, three weeks paid vacation, 12 paid holidays, unlimited sick time, and paid parental leave. Final compensation based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
