About the role
Muon seeks a Senior Instrument Systems Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA or Remote. You'll focus on infrared remote sensing instruments for national security missions, working across component and system levels as a key member of the instrument engineering team.
What you will do
- Lead instrument architecture trades and define concept of operations
- Own radiometric model, throughput budget, requirements decomposition and verification planning
- Develop and manage technical budgets: mass, power, thermal, pointing/jitter, and data volume
- Write interface control documents (ICDs) for mechanical, thermal, electrical, and software interfaces
- Support optical instrument assembly, integration and test (AI&T) planning and implementation
- Champion systems engineering methodology improvements and best practices
- Collaborate with subsystem engineers, AI&T teams, program managers and external partners
- Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation for on-orbit anomaly resolution (approximately one week per month)
What we need
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in engineering or equivalent experience
- 5+ years in multi-disciplinary environments with exposure to imaging systems, infrared remote sensing instruments, and spacecraft
- Software skills in one or more languages (Python, Julia)
- Experience with root cause analysis, data analysis, and testing
- Strong communication, presentation, and organization skills
- Ability to obtain TS/SCI security clearance required; active clearance strongly preferred
Nice to have
- Experience integrating STOP analysis results to drive design trades and error budgets
- Hands-on work with precision optical and mechanical metrology equipment
- Support of environmental testing (thermal stress screening, TVAC, random vibration) and launch campaigns
- Cleanroom environment experience
Compensation
Salary range: $166,000 to $223,000, plus equity grant and comprehensive benefits. Final compensation determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
