About the role
Muon seeks a Senior Optical Test Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA developing infrared remote sensing instruments. In this fully onsite role, you will drive the hands-on testing, characterization, and environmental qualification of critical optical, optomechanical, and moving mechanism subsystems.
Responsibilities
- Drive optical, optomechanical, and moving mechanism component and subsystem test efforts including definition of test strategy and standards, creation of test procedures, test execution, post-processing and data analysis, and generation of test reports.
- Conduct functional, performance, and environmental testing including vibration, thermal-vacuum (TVAC), and thermal stress testing at subsystem and instrument levels.
- Develop and operate ground support equipment (GSE) and testbeds to facilitate instrument-level characterization, calibration, spacecraft integration, and full-system check-outs.
- Champion continuous improvement of testing methodologies, tools, and best practices to enhance efficiency and reliability in instrument development.
- Collaborate with subsystem engineers, systems engineers, AI&T and production teams, program managers, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications
- PhD and 3+ years of experience with imaging or remote sensing instruments in a multi-disciplinary environment; or MS and 6+ years industry experience; or BS and 8+ years industry experience.
- Basic software skills in one or more languages such as Python or C++.
- Experience with precision optical and mechanical metrology equipment.
- Experience performing root cause analysis, rigorous data analysis, post-processing, and test report generation.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and organization skills.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced environments with new challenges each week.
Nice-to-have skills
- Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) for test fixture design.
- Experience assembling and characterizing moving mechanism assemblies.
- Exposure to design and analysis of optical components and systems.
- Experience working in cleanroom environments.
Compensation and benefits
Salary range: $179,000 to $230,000, plus competitive equity grant. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k retirement plan, short and long-term disability and life insurance, three weeks paid vacation for new employees, 12 paid holidays, unlimited sick time, and paid parental leave. Final compensation determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
ITAR/EAR Requirements
This position requires access to export controlled information. Applicants must be either (A) a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee), (B) eligible to access export controlled information without export authorization, or (C) eligible and reasonably likely to obtain required export authorization from a U.S. government agency.
