About the role

Muon seeks a Flight Software Engineer to join our satellite flight software team. You will design, develop, integrate, and test the software and firmware that runs on our orbiting satellites. This is a staff-level position offering significant technical leadership and architectural influence across multiple teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, bring up, and support the embedded software environment running on satellite flight systems using ARM Cortex-M CPUs
  • Develop application, platform, and driver functionality in the flight software environment
  • Translate concepts and requirements into design and working implementations, supporting through to on-orbit operations
  • Provide technical leadership on key projects, organizing cross-functional teams to deliver mission-critical capabilities
  • Develop technical strategy documents including architectural patterns, shared libraries, and common services
  • Integrate compute and peripheral subsystems in both software and hardware
  • Collaborate with hardware team members on design and bring-up of Muon spacecraft
  • Participate in evaluating and selecting technologies for the software foundation
  • Develop software and hardware-in-the-loop test strategies
  • Communicate with cloud backends and set flight software architecture across the team

Required qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
  • 7+ years experience as a software engineer in a team environment
  • Strong C/C++ programming with practical familiarity of other languages
  • Embedded systems fundamentals: resource-efficient design, low-level drivers, bit manipulation, responsive software and IRQ handling, RTOS frameworks, I/O and communication buses
  • Integration and control of external hardware devices
  • Ability to read and understand hardware data sheets
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Experience working on government/defense projects
  • Current TS security clearance

Nice-to-have skills

  • Flight software or closely related domain experience
  • Industry-standard data formats: ProtoBuf, YAML, JSON
  • Rust and Python experience
  • Linux-based development environment
  • Embedded Linux, FPGA, hardware design, or RF communication systems
  • End-to-end development from product concept to delivery

Compensation and benefits

Salary range: $228,000 to $252,000, plus equity grant and comprehensive benefits. Final compensation determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
