Hardware Design Engineer – Radiation Testing (m/f/d) Verified today
Role Overview
As a Hardware Design Engineer in the Radiation Team, you will set up and run tests on electronic components used in our optical communications terminal. You'll advance your understanding of space technology and test hardware, gain hands-on experience with automation and programming, and ensure all work meets industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Radiation Testing of Electronics
- Prepare for radiation test campaigns by developing test strategies, methodology, setups and scripts to test components and subsystems under realistic operational conditions while exposed to radiation.
- Use test results to improve current designs and increase their resilience to radiation effects, meeting customer expectations in a cost-effective way aligned with business goals.
Test Board Design
- Design radiation test boards for cutting-edge electronics.
- Design support electronics for stimulus and measurement collection.
Automation Software
- Write Python or LabView scripts to automate bench instruments via SCPI to control hardware and gather data.
- Use C programming for microcontroller development boards for test inputs and data collection.
Data Collection and Analysis
- Develop methodologies for clear test data collection and easy result analysis.
Standards Compliance
- Ensure all work follows IPC (Institute for Printed Circuits) and ECSS (European Cooperation for Space Standardization) guidelines.
Logistics
- Manage test campaign logistics including verification of setups, booking radiation facilities, travel and equipment shipping.
Travel
- Travel several times a year to facilities throughout Europe and the US.
What You Bring
- BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or similar.
- Minimum 3 years experience in electronic hardware design. Brilliant candidates with less or no experience will be considered.
- Strong curiosity and willingness to expand into new fields of knowledge.
- Proficiency with schematic capture, PCB layout, circuit simulation. Experience with ECAD tools, preferably Altium Designer.
- Familiarity with bench instruments including oscilloscopes, various analyzers and power supplies.
- Knowledge of SCPI scripting language: Python, LabView or equivalent.
- Basic statistics knowledge and ability to analyse captured data and derive conclusions.
- Driving personality that enjoys taking responsibility, exceeding expectations, working outside your comfort zone, and brings a 'can do' attitude.
- Ability to interface across disciplines to resolve technical, schedule and organisational matters.
- Pragmatic approach to tackling issues and ability to create your own momentum and make things happen.
- Willingness to travel within Europe at least once a month, and in the US two or three times a year.
- Optional: Basic knowledge of C++ and FPGA programming workflow.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken. German is a bonus but not required.
What We Offer
- Permanent full-time employment.
- Varied areas of responsibility.
- Attractive employee benefits.
- Opportunity to work on unique and challenging space projects with inspiring colleagues from around the world.
