About Northwood Space
Northwood is a space infrastructure company building a global network of phased array ground stations for real-time, reliable communication with satellite missions. The company designs, builds, and deploys scalable systems for national security, global connectivity, and disaster response.
The Role
You will serve as the Responsible Engineer for electrical systems, owning architecture decisions and driving system-level trades across boards, subsystems, and disciplines. You will define and architect digital compute and power electronics systems that enable high-rate processing worldwide.
Your Responsibilities
- Own electrical architecture and system-level design for high-speed digital communication systems, integrating RF and mixed-signal designs, multi-layer PCBs, and subsystems
- Define system-level architecture for multi-gigabit networking and complex digital power trees; drive trades that shape architecture decisions
- Set technical direction and review schematic capture, layout, and bring-up for FPGAs, microcontrollers, and associated peripherals
- Collaborate with RF engineers, antenna engineers, FPGA engineers, and firmware engineers to optimize system performance
- Guide prototype testing and performance assessment in lab and field environments, with focus on system-level root cause and risk
- Partner with production teams to ensure architecture supports testable, manufacturable products integrated in-house
Basic Qualifications
- 5-7+ years of professional experience in electrical design at the system or architecture level
- Proficient in high-density, high-speed design including FPGAs, high-speed data converters, SerDes, 10/100 GigE, networking, and JESD204C
- Proficient in schematic capture and PCB layout design
- Experience troubleshooting EMI/EMC (conducted or radiated)
- Knowledge of PCB materials and board stack-up definition
- Experience with full product lifecycle from concept through production, owning architecture-level decisions
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years designing high-speed mixed-signal electronics and complex multilayer PCBs for FPGA- or processor-based systems
- Strong expertise in multi-gigabit SerDes, DDR, JESD204B/C, and 10/100G Ethernet
- Deep understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC mitigation, PCB stack-up, and high-performance board layout
- Proven experience leading hardware development from architecture through prototype, validation, manufacturing, and production ramp
- Hands-on debugging of complex hardware systems using advanced lab instrumentation
- Ability to lead cross-functional efforts, mentor junior engineers, and make sound tradeoffs in fast-paced environments
Compensation
Salary based on level and experience:
- Level 3: $122,400 - $153,000 per year
- Level 4: $144,000 - $180,000 per year
- Level 5: $180,000 - $225,000 per year
- Level 6: $204,000 - $255,000 per year
Requirements
Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed. To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations (ITAR), you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
