The Role

The Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, debugs, tests, and implements embedded software and firmware for space systems. You will join a multi-discipline, high-performing engineering team and work 100% onsite in Cape Canaveral.

What You'll Do

  • Develop software and firmware source code in C/C++, Embedded C, and other languages
  • Design and implement device drivers for common embedded interfaces: I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, GPIO, USB
  • Perform board bring-up on new hardware: validating power, clocks, peripherals, and boot stages
  • Develop highly reliable software solutions based on mission requirements
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware engineers on architecture, design, and code review
  • Debug at the register level using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and bus sniffers
  • Provide engineering support for testing, deployment, and software updates
  • Adhere to Quality Management Systems standards and procedures

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 3 or more years of embedded software development experience
  • Strong C and C++ proficiency with knowledge of modern embedded development practices: cross-compilation, toolchains, JTAG/SWD debugging, version control, code review
  • Hands-on experience developing firmware for microcontrollers: STM32, NXP, TI, Microchip families
  • Demonstrated experience writing bare-metal device drivers for I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, GPIO
  • Linux systems-level experience: userspace driver development, /dev, sysfs, /proc, character devices, kernel APIs
  • Firm understanding of FPGA design process: requirements, preliminary design, peer reviews, detailed design, test plan generation, integration and test
  • Ability to read datasheets, reference manuals, and schematics; debug at register level
  • Board bring-up experience: validating power, clocks, peripherals, and boot stages
  • Experience with Git, JIRA, and DevSecOps practices
  • Knowledge of Linux embedded software development: firmware images, kernel configuration, user-space drivers
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365: Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams

Desired Skills

  • Linux kernel driver development: platform drivers, MFD, IRQ handling, DMA
  • Real-time operating system experience: FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX
  • FPGA development: Verilog, VHDL, HDL simulation, timing closure
  • Experience with SoCs combining FPGA and hard processor: Xilinx Zynq, Zynq UltraScale+, Microchip PolarFire SoC, Intel Agilex SoC
  • Build systems for embedded Linux: Yocto, Buildroot
  • High-speed serial interfaces: LVDS, MIPI, Ethernet
