Microwave Plasma Technologist
Space Forge is a fast-growing in-space manufacturing company developing compound semiconductor substrates onboard ForgeStar, the world's first returnable and re-launchable satellite platform. ForgeStar supports in-space manufacturing, microgravity research, planetary landing systems and deep space exploration.
What you will do
- Design, develop, and optimise microwave plasma systems for advanced materials and manufacturing applications
- Model and simulate plasma behaviour generated by microwaves
- Design and test experimental setups
- Analyse performance data and optimise system design
- Conduct FTO (freedom to operate) and prepare IP submissions based on plasma development work
- Develop accurate numerical models of the plasma/microwave system
- Complete design and commissioning of the prototype plasma chamber
- Complete design and commissioning of the first CVD-capable reactor
- Support iterative design changes as reactor limits are identified
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to troubleshoot technical challenges and document methodologies
- Stay current with emerging plasma technologies and contribute to continuous improvement
What we are looking for
Technical skills:
- Strong foundation in plasma physics, electromagnetics, or related disciplines with practical microwave systems experience
- Experience of microwave plasma generation, or at minimum design and development of microwave systems for industrial applications such as heating
- RF design experience
- Hands-on skills in experimental setup and diagnostics for plasma or high-frequency systems
- Experience with numerical modelling or simulation tools, ideally COMSOL, for fields and plasmas
- PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related field; or minimum 5 years relevant on-the-job experience
Soft skills:
- Hands-on experimental attitude
- Enthusiasm for R&D work
- Ability to work safely with vacuum and high-frequency equipment following laboratory safety protocols and industry standards
The role
Full-time, hybrid position based in Cardiff with occasional travel to Swansea. You will work with considerable independence and close collaboration with the engineering team. Flexitime: 40 hours across Monday to Friday as suits your needs and the role.
