Electrical Engineer (Instrumentation and Controls)

SpaceX seeks a systems-focused engineer to design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems and automation for test stands, avionics, and ground support. You will develop and integrate physical hardware including wire harnesses, PCBs, custom enclosures, PLCs, data acquisition systems, and sensors. You are responsible for transferring real-time data from sensors and actuators to operators and engineers, ensuring accurate interpretation of test data from in-space systems, vehicles, and ground systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain operational capability of all control voltage level (<60V) electrical systems
  • Develop and upgrade data acquisition and control systems
  • Create new automation systems for avionics and engine testing
  • Provide technical support and guidance for controls technicians and other engineering groups
  • Develop new hardware and processes to improve capabilities, reduce cost, and setup time
  • Analyze data to assess function and health of electrical systems
  • Assist in design and analysis of experiments to evaluate test articles

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience with data acquisition systems (professional work, internships, clubs, or engineering activities)

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years experience leading a team or project
  • Knowledge of high-reliability processes and documentation practices
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot data acquisition and control hardware
  • Fundamental understanding of electronic equipment, instrumentation, and industrial equipment
  • Experience designing and installing instrumentation and control systems in hazardous areas (NFPA 70 Section 500; Class 1 Division 1 or 2; IEC equivalence)
  • Mixed signal electronics, power supply design, analog filtering, signal integrity, layout and grounding principles
  • Schematic capture and PCB design, verification and validation experience
  • Electrical power distribution; working knowledge of NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E
  • Programming and software development experience
  • Industrial bus protocols such as Modbus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP
  • Hands-on experience with analog and digital electronic systems, including avionics
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in ambiguity
  • Ability to rapidly change roles in a high-paced environment

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, twist upper body, and work in cramped spaces and small openings
  • Ability to work at elevated heights (200+ feet)
  • Regular climbing of stairs and ladders throughout the day
  • Ability to lift supplies or materials up to 25 lbs unassisted
  • Available to work extended hours and weekends when needed; flexibility required
  • Work in environment with exposure to fumes, odors, flashing lights, heat, cold, rain, and noise
  • Ability to travel to other SpaceX or third-party facilities (up to 25%)
