Embedded Software Engineer, Laser Mesh Routing (Starlink)

SpaceX is deploying Starlink, the world's largest satellite constellation providing fast, reliable broadband to millions globally. All Starlink satellites have laser terminals connecting to other satellites in orbit, creating a laser mesh network. You will solve the software challenges that maximize this hardware's performance.

As a Beam Planning Software and Network Software Engineer, you will develop highly reliable, real-time software that determines which beams (user, laser, gateway, etc.) should be formed to provide the best user experience on our low-latency, high-bandwidth network. Your software will have measurable impact on global internet access.

Responsibilities

  • Develop highly reliable, real-time software that determines beam formation to optimise user experience across the satellite network
  • Participate in and lead architecture, design, and code reviews
  • Develop prototypes and manage experiments to validate key design concepts
  • Develop tools for software development, deployment, data analysis, visualisation, and test execution across virtualised hardware environments, real hardware-in-the-loop simulations, and on-orbit testing

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or science; OR 2+ years of professional software development experience (internships count)
  • Development experience in assembly, C, or C++

Preferred Experience

  • Real-time rendering, game engine development, physics simulation, or high-performance computing in resource-constrained environments
  • Network topology, numerical optimisation, graph theory, or convex optimisation
  • Software developed, debugged, and deployed in real-world applications
  • Creative problem-solving and strong analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Experience with dynamic environments and changing requirements
  • Distributed systems and internet services

Additional Requirements

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

Compensation

  • Level 1: USD 135,000 to USD 175,000
  • Level 2: USD 155,000 to USD 210,000
  • Actual level and salary determined on case-by-case basis based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience
  • Long-term stock or cash awards, discretionary bonuses, employee stock purchase plan
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, dental coverage; 401(k); disability and life insurance; paid parental leave; 3 weeks paid vacation; 10+ paid holidays annually; paid sick leave

ITAR Requirements

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain required authorisation from the U.S. Department of State
