Hardware Reliability Engineer (Build Reliability)
The Build and Hardware Reliability organization at SpaceX is an inclusive, inter-disciplinary team committed to the reliability of flight components and production assemblies. You will collaborate across design, test, and manufacturing teams, guiding hardware from development to production and operation. You will use data to identify factors that drive reliability, support quality objectives, and solve difficult technical problems at both component and vehicle system levels.
Responsibilities
- Partner with design, test, and manufacturing teams through product development and production to ensure reliability of Avionics parts (controllers, RIOs, sensors, RF, power systems, solar arrays, wire harnessing, etc.)
- Track yield, test and inspection escapes, and ensure failures and lessons learned are incorporated into new product introduction (NPI)
- Develop, implement and validate Lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products, ensuring objective criteria and consistent quality goals
- Monitor product and process success through production ramp-up using quality and analysis tools
- Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved, identify risk reduction opportunities, and collaborate with teams to address non-conformances
- Investigate failures in production, test and flight to identify and mitigate root causes and improve reliability
- Perform structured electrical root cause analysis of failures during development and production using schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes
- Perform gage repeatability and reproducibility studies to validate product acceptance test systems
- Contain non-conforming product and provide guidance on quarantine and rework activities
- Support continuous improvement and Lean production through standard rework guides, removal of redundant inspection, and optimization of critical processes
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering physics
- 1+ years in manufacturing, quality, or design engineering role (student project team or internship experience qualifies)
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills with enthusiasm for innovation and reliability improvement
- Hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting PCBAs
- Experience supporting production and test of complex electromechanical assemblies
- Knowledge of quality tools: Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis and corrective action (RCCA), advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and problem-solving approaches
- Dedicated to Lean quality approach without compromising safety or reliability
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as needed
