About the role

The Starship avionics team designs and builds advanced electronics for orbital flight. You will design a Starship avionics system optimized for high reliability at low mass and cost, working on instrumentation that must survive extreme thermal, dynamic and pressure conditions.

What you will do

  • Design custom instrumentation for extreme thermal, dynamic and pressure environments
  • Design integrated product solutions for fluid and electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Perform thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis for mechanical assemblies using hand calculations and finite element analysis
  • Participate in mechanical design, 3D modeling, creation of production drawings and maintenance of design data
  • Conduct failure analysis of components related to thermal, loads, vibration and shock
  • Interface with machine shops and production teams to ensure designs can be produced to project specifications
  • Lead design reviews internally and participate in reviews with suppliers and partners
  • Participate in the manufacturing line, hands-on with pressure testing, thermal testing, laser welding and related processes

Basic requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or electrical engineering
  • 1+ years of experience with mechanical or electromechanical design and analysis (internships and student project experience qualifies)

Preferred skills and experience

  • Proficiency with CAD and FEA software packages
  • Strong hand calculation and finite element analysis capabilities
  • Experience with high volume production design and design for manufacturability
  • Exposure to high vibration and high pressure environment design
  • Understanding of structural analysis and failure modes
  • Experience with thermal and structural FEA studies
  • Experience with fatigue and thermal testing of electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T
  • Experience working with PCB designers and exposure to PCB layout
  • Strong organizational, written and oral communication skills

US person requirement

To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident (green card holder), Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Compensation

Pay range:

  • Mechanical Engineer Level I: $100,000 to $130,000 per year
  • Mechanical Engineer Level II: $110,000 to $160,000 per year

Base salary is one part of your total rewards package. You may also be eligible for company stock, stock options, long-term cash awards, discretionary bonuses and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
